I thought both his cars ran the 3 muffler system???? The 3rd one is a transverse muffler in the stock location. I'm not sure which mufflers Dennis uses, but you can hardly tell his slow car is running standing at the fence next to the track........as it runs low 10s

Adam

his slow car uses the 17276 ultraflow.

his fast car is a modified ATR crossflow set up for 2-in and 2-out (I think) its not as quiet, but it does run 9's

From what I can tell a 17276 is a stainless steel polished version of a 17231 which is welded aluminum and half the price at 91.88 from summit, If its good enough for Dennis its good enough for me

Buying the muffler is the easy part. Getting someone to custom fab some pipes is the hard part.

Sounds like a job for Keith Mease , im gonna use a pit bull 3" in place of the cat, and i think Borla might have a dual cross flow muffler for the rear.

Matt from what I read it doesnt make much of a difference putting the pitbull there , It seems that the further away from the motor the better, Im gonna look into the borla crossflow , Ive never heard of a borla system that didnt sound good

I have been running 3 mufflers on my Malibu for years. It's an ATR single with a Pitbull transverse and 2 Summit 3" bullet style muffs that is straight through design. Much quieter and it didn't seem to cost me any performance at the track.

We went to the dyno with Dennis,s car and made a run with the exhaust and without. It made 7 more hp without the exhaust hooked up :) It cant hurt it to much it made 756 to the tire through 3 mufflers on 22# boost :D The car also went 9.32 146 MPH on 21.5#boost 2 week ago  I bitched like hell about that exhaust hurting his HP and after our test i cant say anything about a HP loss but the weight is something else  Sure takes people by surprize to see a low 9sec car without any noise to judge how fast it is

It would make a heck of a street racer......

We need an exhaust place to make tri-muff kits...!!

I have a Terry Houston dual 2.5" on my car that I would love to adapt.....

I have some friends locally (Stenod Racing) that may give it a shot for me.

I too would be interested in a quality system that runs the two mufflers under the car alongside the driveshaft into a nice crossflow muffler in the stock location. Or heck, just have one nice quiet free flowing crossflow muffler in the stock location like the stock system. I like the stealth car myself.

 The weight is the issue I see The Delta Flow mufflers are 21lbs each and thats not a cross flow the stock cross flow is is almost 40lbs
To me I would rather stay lite and be a little load :D
That just me I am 35 (the 18th ot this month lol) and I dont like the sound of ricers but I love the sound of my buick!!!
Just my .02

Just go to the parts store and get a Monte SS exhaust,2" pipes, stock "turbo"mufflers, quiet as hell and I ran a 12.93 thru it with a crappy tune.Cost was around $100.00 for everything. You can re-do the pipes to exit at the wheelwell.

This is good info , Im glad im not the only one who can appreciate a quiet fast ride, I found this site who sells high performance crossflow muffs http://pypesexhaust.com/mufflers.html, I will be calling them to see how much hp they can flow and narrow it down to a choice between one of them or a 17231 Dynomax(Although it is not intended for crossflow application but has been PROVEN to work) . Heres A question that I should have asked before: In dennis's Car are the 2 top ports of the muffler used as inlets OR is the top left used as inlet and the Bottom right used as an inlet ?? Like the pic ??

your pic is correct, which requires a little extra work to get it all connected.
(based on my conversations with Dennis)

But the results are worth it.

That Pypes website appears that they like 'loud'.... so they would not be my first choice.

There's an audio section at the site. They have a 69 T/A with the Crossflow in it. Sounds good with a V8 but I think it will drone with a 6.

Im gonna see an exhaust guy this week who does all custom fabbing, I explained to him the situation and he said he would like to see the car first, I will most likely go with a 17231, The cheapest I have seen it is at summit for 91.88. I called pypes and their "cross flow" is not a real crossflow design its also 125.00 and probably louder so im not going that way .

I am going to chime in and give my 2 cents. This is a little off topic, but I really enjoyed reading this thread, because the quiet stealthy approach of the grand nationals is a big part of why I fell in love with them. I have seen really loud obnoxious v8 cars run 15's in the quarter then I would, see these Grand Nationals where all I could hear was this whistle?, and they would be running 11s. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world and is a big part of the reason I drive 1 now.

Loudness isn't an indicator of performance. Sometimes when I'm in the staging lanes I have to look at my scanmaster just to see if my car is running because I can't hear it over some stupidly loud car in the next lane. I got tired of the constant drone and having to have the radio up too loud just to hear it with my old T/A. Quiet acceleration is one of the best things about TBs.

pictures of his 3 muffler set up

At turbo thunder IV he was nice enough to let me take some pictures of his set up. I wanted the same thing on my car but it would not fit on mine. Hope this helps out. You can pull the part # from the pictures if you want.
Oh one other thing you can't hear it run at all at the track.

Thanks for the great pics!!!! I just noted somthing about the 17231 vs the 17276 Besides the 17231 being aluminized its also a 14" muffler rather than the 17276 which is a 20" , I think at this point the extra money is worth it only because it has been used in dennis's car and it simply works. The 17276 is avaiable from summit at 179.95  , If it quiets the car down as people have said than its worth it.

Look how he ran it

From what I rember talking to him about it the exhaust comes over the axles and ----><----- against each other at the top and exits down <--- --->at the bottom. You will have to make sure thats what he did, but I think thats why its so nice. One other thing if you are going to do all this and spend the money mights as well be ss. He also said it was a tight run over the rear axles too. Good luck and let us know how it sounds if at all .. ;)
