Anyone regret going from a 4 bolt to a 3 bolt turbo for the street? Does it effect spool time drastically? Thanks

We have done this on a few GN's, both street and strip, and have not found any downside.

Of course boost control is much more precise, accurate and consistent.

Thanks for the reply Nick, looking forward to getting my Stage II back from you. Looks like I'll be getting headers and a DP from you too. So what do you think of a 71HPS turbo for my set-up? Thanks!

TC3,

How fast do you want to go?

I would like to run 9's but will primarily be a street car. I'd like to see how fast I could go on E85. Thanks!

So you took a 4 bolt off, and put the 3 bolt housing back on, correct?

Th only reason this community runs 3 bolts is becuase Terry Houston made that downpipe back in the day and made it easy to bolt on a big turbo. 4 bolts always work better just tougher to install.

I agree, that's why I want Nick to clarify his statement because I believe he may be thinking the opposite.

X2.....I 've been running 4 bolt exhaust housing on my car since 1992 on the street around 50K miles...no issues at all with pin point boost control with an external gate at the collector of the header.
I also have seen people with boost creep issues with a 3 bolt turbo and 3" to 3.5" down pipe and external gates. The new billet turbos move so much air as they are so efficient, it's much more harder to control boost with 3 bolt setup. Just recently, we went through hell and back with a billet 67/65, a 3.5 DP with 46mm waste gate and 3 bolt housing ported to hell, we did everything to maximize the flow and still had boost creep. We went to a four bolt housing and waste gate below the turbo on the collector. Now we have pin point boost control, less back pressure in the system as well. No track times yet

Just my $.02

Thanks for the tips! I meant to post...does anyone regret going from a 3 bolt to a 4, sorry for the confusion.

Sounds like everyone with 4bolt are happy.

I'm running 3 bolt personally with external gate dumped and on spring it doesnt creep any. It does creep a little with my rjc controller hooked up though, but only about 1.5psi max.
