I know we all like to beat on Ricers, but to tell you the truth....

It would be very boring out on the street without them.

When I go out on a weekend their is rice all over me.

I would be bored to tears without Rice to Race.

In reality it is all good, anything that promotes perfomance cars is good in my book. These kids are into a good sport that gives them something positive to do.

As we look at the prices and fuel economy of the old muscle cars, their is no way young kids could afford the price or the gas of the old muscle cars, unless they got a turbo buick that is.

Rice gives them a way to have a fast street cars (and lets not kid ourselfs, they can be built to go very fast) and afford the fuel and price of the car. Not many kids could walk into a bank to get a loan on a 40k SS chevelle, but they can get a loan for a new import that they can drive all the time.

So all in all I think it is good for all of us that performance is back in any form.

I have raced many ricers (pounding them by the way) and after the race we will pull over and chat. They usually turn out to be some really nice young fellows that just like cars, even though they may look like Gangsters at first site. I find that they are very knowledgeable about electronice and engine management, and i have leared a thing or two from some of them. Now that is where I live in Alaska and may not reflect the rest of the nation by any means.

They like the same things that we do, fast cars. But, maybe just a different flavor. Some people like chineese food, some people like Mexican food and some people will bitch about whatever food you put in front of them? It is all food.

The import Scene is HUGE in Anchorage. I bought my GN in Alaska and did my fair share of rice cooking but there was a guy up there with an ice blue civic that ran a legitament(i watched it with my own eyes at the 1/4 mile DS in the valley) 12.0 12.2's. That is a respectable time in my eyes for a civic. How long have you been in AK? Harry

Ak

I was born here in 63. My Grandparents came here in the 30's.

Have been racing at Polar (Now Alaska raceway park) for 20 years or so off and on.

I live in Fairbanks.

if the car is fast, it gets my respect. I wouldn't call a 12.00 sec. civic rice. That is a fast car! Period. Rice is a honda civic with a fart can and stickers and 3 ft. high spoiler that clicks off an 18 sec. quarter that I can beat with my minivan. THAT is rice. All show, no go. Anything that is fast is cool in my book. import or not. It's all about the speed.

I simply wish they would not insist on Jap cars, why not use an SRT-4, Cobalt SS or any American vehicle. That is my bitch.

The SRT-4 and the Colbalt SS are getting very popular around here. The SRT seems to respond better to mods than the Colbalt in my opinion, Maybe because the Colbalt just came out and the aftermarket isn't in place yet.My son's SRT with a Buschur exhaust,Stage 1 ecm and a K&n cold air intake ran 12.84 without turning up the boost but getting it to hook is getting very difficult. He has since added a bigger turbo, injectors, innercooler etc. and traction is areal issue. I think FINALLY the American manufactures are seeing the market potentional and are adressing it!

I agree

I was impressed that it ran in the 12's with only the mods I listed. He dyoned shortly after and he made 301 at the wheels. He has assured me though that after he gets it to run in the 11's we get back to finishing up his G.N. That would make me VERY happy.

There have been "Ricers", or punk kids doing stupid things to cars since cars became affordable. I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but if you've ever seen an old authentic "Rat Rod" from the 50's - 60's there are alot of similarities to the rice we see on the roads today. Mismatched rims, primer only on the hood or doors, no fenders, a "built" flathead motor, and other oddities. As these people matured, they started taking street rods and making the pieces of art you see today. I'm sure as these kids get into their 30's, 40's, and 50's you will see some really well done imports on the street.

Oh yeah, and Fartcans? Well, my grandfather saw one once and said that when he was young in the 1930's that they used to make fartcans out of coffee cans and put them on their exhausts. I guess it's all just part of being a teenager into cars.

There's a difference in Ricer and just an import car.

Ricer (which is noted above) slow, fart cannon, stickers, body kit, subs, neons, and is running 17's.

My friends dad said when we were at the track last, a ricer ran 18's and he said 'i might as well bring my CR-V out here!'

If i see an import car running at slowest 14's, it'll get a 'atleast its not a slow car' but really, if the car is performance base, not looks, and can keep up with the muscle cars, then it'll get my respect.

I think most ricers still like muscle cars at heart, but yet they know they can get the same performance out of a tiny car with better gas mileage...but yet, they wont ever get the nice low tone rumble of a muscle car.

Sure they can have their UFO looking cars, but i know i wont be the one to buy one, I'm GN all the way.

Those SRT-4's can be quick. I saw one at the track the other night running in the 12's. Seems like alot of "bang for the buck" for only $19k sticker price + a few mods to get into the 12's.
