Can someone here with a laser pyrometer take their car out, run the shit out it of real quick, then take a heat reading of the side of the alky tank that faces the down pipe by chance? I hear meth boils at 155 degrees. Could you boil your meth by running hard for a few hours? The face of my meth tank gets really freakin' hot... I wonder...

Ummmm No.

Why should/would any of us any of us want to prove out what you "hear"?

Are you using the old coolant recovery tank spot with an alky tank? That is my set up.

I live in Phoenix AZ, sometimes I drive my car in the searing 110 degree summer heat, once in a while I run her with the A/C on and can almost guarantee the under hood temps tickle, if not exceed 155 degrees.

I haven't ever witnessed the methanol "boil".

Nor have I experienced "boiling" in the lines when running around in the high heat.

One of my best friends (twin turbo BMW w/ methanol injection) warned me of the danger. My builder, Lou Czarnota, had a differing opinion, he didn't say "do it" but he was fairly confident that Julio's set up wouldn't "boil" unless I was being a complete dumbass. I try to avoid the dumbass scenario as much as possible, but I miss the mark..... often.........:D:D

Here's what I have discovered:

If it's hot outside, don't romp on your car, if you do, expect to pay for the consequences.

Because what I "heard" was from Julio himself. I just couldn't help thinking, that our underhood temps in the summer approach 155. So to confirm, I was going to try the experiment. So if it boils at 155, what does it do at 150? Does it evaporate quicker?

The only way your getting 155+ is with the car sitting in the sun and not moving. Once you get moving ambient temp is under the hood. At 40 mph you don't have 155 unless your in the desert. The plastic tanks doesn't retain heat..

A few things are typically done, get rid of the weather strip on the cowl to allow it to vent.. note the GNX and its fender vents.. Another thing would be to insulate the tank.. note the TTA overflow. And if you needed to raise the boiling temp of meth, add some water to it.

If my under hood temps where that high, I don't think i'd be beating on the car. Not because of the meth, just that engines don't like being raced that hot.

If I lived in the Middle East.. i'd use a trunk tank to control tank temp. Most kits I make for those countries are fuel cell rear mounted. The Buick.. its extremely rare to have the meth boiling n the tank. Not impossible.. but highly unlikely.

Wrap the down pipe, insulate the tank, open up the venting under hood, etc etc etc.. all can't hurt.. whether its needed or not.. that depends.

Lastly.. meth boiling in the pressure line.. add a high pressure check valve to the nozzle.. those are standard on Porsche and the new Eco-Boost kit setups.

Roger that. The cowl weatherstripping is already off. And if it's not going to get to 155 then I'm all set. No need to worry. I'm just checkin' that's all. I like to be thorough.
