Kinda related and maybe I can get an opinion.
A buddy calls me and wants to put something on his bucket list. He wants to run the NYC marathon, I say are you crazy? He says no I think we can do it. I told him I drive 26 miles and I get tired.....lol.
We are both the same age 46 and he is not athletic but is thin like a runner and I play hockey a couple times a week and am in decent shape, could stand to lose 10 more pounds tho.
My question is can this be done and any tips for training or opinions would be appreciated.
He did say he wanted to do this before we turn 50 but we aint getting any younger.....lol.

Tommy I ran for years but am recovering from a 3rd metatarsal break in my foot so im on the bike for now.
IMO run early in the morning before work. Yeah its gonna suck getting up early but you will be done with the run for the day. Just remember the miltary days (i think you said you were in teh service before?)
As stated before stretch and warm up prior to excercise for a good 10 minutes. Run/jog/exert yourself for 30 minutes minimum (not including warm up) to get your heart in the target fat burning area.
i.e.- you should be feeling it and it will be a strugglebut push yourself dont stop and walk unless your gonna collapse...LOL.
Stay hydrated your pee should not stink or be yellow. Be sure and counter each Cafe con Leche with double h20. i.e.- 1 cup cubano coffe you should drink 2 cups h20.
You can eat a bannana 30 minutes before running to help give some carbs.
After a month of running 3-4 times a week for 30 move up to 45 minutes.
