Article our cars got in hotrod magazine...

Hey guys, I know youre like me, and flip thru hot rod magazines while at meijer or the grocery store, so tell me what magazine this was I was looking at. Was about 6 months ago, at 'rite aid' drug store. I THINK it was called popular hotrodding? All i know is, in the first say, 5, 6 pages of the mag, there was a page set aside for the editor to just talk about what he wanted to talk about. Well in this particular month, he was talking about the best overall muscle car out. He started off the article, about how even though the old school 60's muscle cars were fast, they were only fast for THEIR eras. Quoting the hemi cuda and such. So I keep reading, and low and behold, he finishes the article with " I think the best overall muscle car to ever be produced, was the buick grand nationals. They can be made to go the fastest, with the least amount of mods "

I was like 'woah, hey honey, come read this....' Anyone spot this article?

I tried to look at the back issues online for Popular Hotrodding magazine but on dialup....it was an exercise in pain!

If you can find out what mag it was I bet we can order a back issue and add one to our collections

I think, its the july 2006 issue. anyone have this? if so, could you please check the first few couple pages in it, to see if this is in fact, the issue where the author talks about the turbo regals?

Don't know about that particular editorial but there's one in the January 2007 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines by Ray Bohacz that speaks highly of turbo Buicks. He starts out by recalling the largest displacement engines available back in the day and then explains how he learned about turbocharging.

Excerpt:

I vividly remember my first exposure to a then-new 1978 four-barrel turbo Regal. I was at a stoplight in my '68 Slant-Six Dodge Dart when the hair dryer-equipped Buick pulled up next to me.

Just then, the Regal lurched forward and pulled a few car lengths ahead of my Dodge, before the brake lights came on and we both had to stop. It was me who suffered humiliation as we waited for the light to turn green.

That moment cemented in my mind the virtue of forced induction. A short 10 years later I would open up a shop that specialized in tuning late model performance cars with an emphasis on the Buick GN and eventually the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans-Am. The most power I ever made with an engine was 1,312 horsepower on John Meaney's dyno in Michigan. It was a 4.1 liter Buick V-6 with aftermarket symetrical port cylinder heads and a custom manifold. It featured twin turbos and 160 pound/hour fuel injectors.

That humiliating day in 1978 was the catalyst for my interest in turbos that eventually opened the door for my writing career. I guess I work best "under pressure."

and renthorin, that buick article, is i think a 455 buildup, if im not mistaken.

the article im referring to, is pretty much just a page set aside, for the writer to just babble i think. i think its the 5th page in or so. but im almost positive thats the book i was lookin at. Ill find it. if its the last thing i gotta do.

That Ray Bohacz is starting to get on my nerves. If I ever meet him in person I'm going to kick him in the turbine after I give him a piece of my mind. Yea, I admit, the earlier turbo cars werent miracles, but, that just means you gotta know what youre doing a little more now, thats all. They run fine I thought. If I had the money, Id love to experiment on an all black or burgundy 80 sport coupe. It would be quite fun.

cool thank you.. but did you find that one dudes little 'opinion article' ? id say it was like 7 or so pages in, and it took up i think, most of the page. and it was him detailing his opinons on the best bang for the buck, as far as muscle cars. and he described the old school muslce cars, as being 'not as fast as you think they were', and how the buicks, could whoop pretty much anything around, for less than x amunt of money. was that article in there?

You mention PHR often but the thread title is HR mag....

I never checked the back issues of HR mag but might do that today from work while 'on my break'.....

Isn't one of the guys a sometimes member of this board. Username is GMHTP or something. Also try camaroz28.com or whatever the sister board used to be called (when they were both owned by Jason).

No, this thread wasnt started on hotrod magazine. I was referring to 'popular hotrodding' When I mentioned earlier, the term 'hotrod magazines' I was using it in a neutral fashion. Meaning, any magazine that talks about souped up cars, not THE " Hotrod Magazine "

At any rate, I called there, and they quickly got rid of me, by shuffling my call to someones answering machine, and the 2 email addresses they offer, are both non functional... Not too good on the public relation skills....
