Had to go to Lake City From Gainesville and back, about a 100 miles round trip, yesterday. Let my 15 year old son who has had his learner's permit for about four months now drive the Turbo for the first time. We took back two lane roads so he would not have the traffic of I-75 to deal with.

He's been really good with the Caddy and the Van so I thought I'd make his day. I ask him if he wants to drive to Lake City and back and he says OK. He grabs the keys to the van and heads out the door. I call him back and hand him the keys to the Turbo and ask for the van keys back and hang them up.

The grin was worth it all!

The bad dad part is there are stretches of two lane with no cross roads or driveways and straight as an arrow for miles so for the first time in his life I let him touch 100 MPH for a couple of seconds before bringing him back to 55. I also let him brake torque it and smoke the hides. I kept the boost at 13-14 lbs so he would not break the tires loose unexpectidly

He's hooked!

He's been driving fast (60+ mph) go karts for a couple of years and is only a tenth or two behind me in lap times so I wasn't worried about his control of the "T". The boy can drive!

on back roads "in the day" I was only 14-15yrs old. He also let me drive the 5-speed Explorer too. I still remember him racing a CRX with me sitting shotgun. He never let me speed though :( .

Your not a bad dad at all................well, maybe you could be I dont know you personally

great dad......IF AND ONLY IF you make him earn it. He will want to work 10x harder now that he's got a taste for it. So no turbo if grades slip EVEN A BIT. Work or no work that is not really important yet but HARD WORK and not going to "hang out" is important at that age trust me! once a week sure, but everyday is a BIG no no.

make him earn the sweet taste don't spoon feed him or it will be another 10 years before he learns some lessons the hard way.

My son drove my 68rs on back roads last year when he was 10,10 second car,but he drove slow...He has been driving go carts and such since he was 2,Everytime we go out on the boat I have him move my A-Team van,he starts it and moves it across the yard(he is 11 now)...We were at a car show yesterday and I told him to pull my GN over into another parking spot, everyone looked shocked...Thats a bad dad,or a bit crazy but he is 5 foot 5 and weighs in at 142 and pretty good...plus we were not around a bunch of nice cars, they had left and I had him pull up front...

Everytime we are out on my 25 foot boat he drives it and parks it,I sit back and relax with the wife and my daughter..He drives better than the wife and most people I take out boating...Heres him driving the boat from allmost 2 years ago..

Som kids are mature for the age and some are not,im not sure if ill ever let him go full out on any of my cars even when he is of age as my gn is in the 11s and my 68 camaro is now a twin turbo 408 and too much power for most people even if they are of age..

You have to be careful. I taught my son how to drive in my GNX. Now he's a bigger gearhead than me.

Mike,

Ya got a smart young man there, Met both of ya back at the BOP

IM a firm believer in.. teach em how to handle guns and cars and the responsibility they involve and everything will be AOK

Yes I remember you and your wife. Remember my oil leak? It was not the cometic head gasket leaking the oil. There was a tiny pinhole in the oil line to the turbo putting out an almost invisible stream of oil right on the corner of the head. Brand new motor-brand new oil line go figure.

The picture of your son driving the boat has my son drooling. Thanks.

Good dad. He Karts, he knows danger.

My dad taught me how to drive a manual in his 86' 930 Turbo. I will never forget it, and it's a thought that always enters my mind when I think about cars.

You did it in a TR, so it's definitely burned in his head.

my dad let me drive his we4 from almost day one once I got my license and even when I had my permit... he kept telling me abuse it or let my school work slack and it was gone. I remeber the first time he let me race it.... first pass was 15 something because the FPR line came undone and I lifted... I talked him into making one more pass.... turns out I ran faster then he ever did the in the car mph and et wise :P still makes him mad to this day :D

Im sure that is something he will remember forever. Pretty kool.
