HD DVD is pretty much dead.. thought Id bump this back up since Toshiba has officially pulled the plug on HD DVD development. Looks like BluRay is the winner.

It's hard to believe Sony will win.

Sadly I think Blu Ray is going to end up being the standard. Too many studios are abandoning HD DVD and I dont think even the porn industry will be able to save it.

I believe its because HD DVD has already been cracked.. Blu Ray hasn't 100%. I think that alone is driving studios to Blu Ray.

Look at all the other formats they followed that have died a slow death. I think BR will survive.

Need to bring Beta back!

I still have my original BETA video camera and VCR. Both still work. The camera must weigh over 3 tons, it's one of those big ones you have to stick on your shoulder. Originally cost $1500.

The VCR I kept because I had a bunch of BETA tapes with my kids in their childhood on them. Just recently I bought a gizmo that takes your VCR output and converts it to DVD.... I spend a couple of nights re-recording all my BETA tapes to DVD.

I was fixing to write in

I saw that HD DVD was dead this morning on CNN.com. Toshiba pulled the plug citing the Warner pledge to release their movies on blu- ray discs only. Seems kinda a crappy pull out to me. People have the nice 300 - 600 hd dvd players that are now totally paper weights.

Im glad I got a PS3

I just went out and did the exact opposite of what other people are probably doing today. I went to Circuit City and bought a Toshiba DH-A30 for $129. Every since I bought my Panasonic Plasma 1080p HDTV, I've been itching to buy a HD DVD or Blu Ray player. The PS3 and Blue Ray players are in the $400 range and I'm not going to shell out that kind of dough at this time.

There are a ton of good old movies out there on HD DVD. I'll sit and wait a while for people and places to start liquidating them and pick them up at dirt cheap prices. I'll buy a Blu Ray player in the future for sure, but only when the prices come down to the $150 range, otherwise I'll just use the 1080p upconvert on the Toshiba for new movies on standard DVD and build up a collection of HD DVDs for older or recent movies.

After all the research, sounds like PS3 is the way to go!! 80GB model. It is supposed to be even more backward compatible with PS2 games than the 40GB model.

PS3 is wireless network upgradeable when Blu Ray standards change, and upconverts my standard DVD's

Now, to figure out how to talk the significant other into the $500

I bought a Sony Blu-Ray at Target,It was 379,But they give you a $100 gift card at the register and 5 free Blu-Ray movies.
Not a bad deal

I was looking at the ps3 last night, I guess they don't go on sale, why the 80 gig over the 40 gig, because of the ps2 compatability?

Damn, I am glad I bought a BluRay!! I bought the Samsung BD1400, it has an ethernet port on it for software upgrades. I just ran a network cable to it permanently since my router is on the second floor. Awesome picture from this unit.

Anyone know the price of a samsung blue ray home theater setup? Best deal and soforth? Been looking into getting something to match the samsung tv I just bought. The tvs are awesome:cool: . All I got is a regular dvd player right now with svideo cable. My daughter was watching shreck 3 and it just looked fricken awesome so I sat down and watched the rest of it:biggrin:

The 80 gig PS3 has 2 extra USB ports, the memory card reader, and ps2 emulation (and obviously more HDD space).

I think they are right at 500.00, my son worked for Ultimate Electronics at the time so I got cost on mine(under 300.00). I figured while I was at it( since he was leaving there to go work for Circuit City) I might as well get A Denon 1600 watt HD receiver, Definitive Technology surround speakers, front towers, center channel, 600 watt Powered sub, Monster Cables, & Monster Power Center to connect to the Samsung 46" LCD/1080p. WICKED theater surround!!!

I told the wife that I could have had a low 9 sec motor for what I spent on this stuff even at cost.

Samsung LCD's are awesome, I now have a 40" in my master bedroom as well.(no surround... yet )

That's what I've been told.

The 40 gig has zero backwards compatibility, the 80 uses software and its about 80-90% depending on where you read about it.. I got lucky and got a 60 gig(which has the actual PS2 chipset in it) and have damned near 100%, even for newer games.. It would appear that they are changing up the SKU's for the 80 gig PS3 and releasing something new soon.. If you have a Sams or something near by and can find one, grab a 60 or 80gb model...I love mine for the movies, the games and the fact that I can use all my PS2 games on it still...BD player for 400 bux!
