Went to a street car bracket today and won with an 11.92 dial. I left it at my 21psi street boost. New ignition module worked flawlessly, even though it was near 90 degrees and extremely humid. Had one bye run so went more aggressive on the launch and went:

60': 1.718
1/8th: 7.552 @ 91.94mph
1/4: 11.778 @ 116.87

This is my best ET and mph at this boost level. Car is very consistent on a 11.9x dial leaving a little room for error.

Thank you Bob for another great product. Dramatically cleaned up the lean cruise and idle as well.

I made the passenger side out of 16 gauge steel plate ($7.00) and the drivers side out of 2 inch aluminum angle iron (I had a piece laying around). I used 4 threaded rods ($2.00) to secure the coils to the brackets and hollow steel tubs ($5.00) as spacers.

I only took me a few hours and the only tools I needed were; a Dremel with cut off wheel, a drill and a bench vice that I used to bend the steel plate.

Didn't see an order come thru and want to make sure I didn't miss it.

The coils like to be grounded via both. We can handle it in the harnesses though.

I can make a custom harness like that.

Thanks for the kind words, keep an eye out for the next 'innovation' next year. (will not be ignition) :)

Bob

Hi Bob,

Could you please elaborate further on how the LS-2 coils are grounded. I've done alot of research on grounding the LS-2 coils and everything I have found so far just talks about the coil being grounded through the harness and doesn't mention the metal clip that goes around the plastic coil body. I see that you say the LS-2 coils LIKE to be grounded through both the wire and the body (via the silver metal tab that comes out of the coil body and attaches to the metal clip). When you say that you "CAN handle the ground through the harness" did you mean you could make a special harness for the purpose of not grounding the coils with both wire and body, or are the two grounding rings on the CNP harness sufficiant to provide a good enough ground for the coils?

The way I have it set up now there is no contact anywhere on the metal clips and is only grounded with the two rings (on studs at the back of the intake). The car starts right up and idles better than it ever has but as soon as it goes into boost it runs rough. Hard to explain......maybe a slight misfire???

I'm thinking either the coils aren't grounded good enough or the car doesn't like NGK UR-5 2771 plugs gapped at .040.

Your advice will be greatly appriciated.

I can't see the attached pics any more, but I'm using Chrome today and it may be related to that.

The metal clip to the mounting bolt is a redundant ground, and I like making sure all the grounds are redundant. The ring terminals are the primary ground for the coils.

I don't have any experience with those coils. But, how did you set the switches inside the box? (thinking the rev limiter might not be set)

Wow thanks for the speedy response!!!

I have the main rev limiter set to 6000 and the trigger limiter set to 3000 (which I tested on the trans break). I do have the waste spark switch in the OFF position. Is thsi right for CNP setup?

Unless there are some internal connection it doesn't look like the metal insert on the mounting bolt holes are connected to anything.

Here is a pic of my coils with the metal clip around them. The silver tab is coming out of the coils body and crimper to the surrounding metal clip. I looks like that metal clip is suppose to press against the a bracket for grounding purposes. But if it's primary ground is through the wire than I may have issues elsewhere.

You're right. The grounding clip I was thinking of is on the wastespark pack, its around one of the mounting bolts and also ties to the ground pin of the connector.

It sounds like its set up properly.

Oh...OK then. This my be my problem after all. The LS-2 coils may need the extra ground. I do not have the metal clips touching anything right now. I will ground them to the stud on the back of the intake tonight and see if that helps.

Also...is the mode 4 dip switch suppose to be in the OFF position for CNP setup? The only referance I found in the manual was to switch it ON. But, I assume that was writen for the wastespark set ups.

Thank You for your help Bob.

Update;
Ok so...the silver tab that connects to the metal clip around the body of the LS-2 coils is a heat sink, not for grounding. At least as far as I can tell from a lot of google searching.

Bob, Have a question about your setup... Once you purchase the system with the wastespark, is it to much of an issue to upgrade to the coil on plug?

actually I believe its an EMI shield

Bob

Thanks for clearing that up Bob. Still chasing down why my CNP setup is running rough when ever my car goes into boost (runs better then ever otherwise). My ignition volts are 13-13.5, my CCCI is hotwired so it's getting plenty of juice, the grounds are good and I'm running autolite 23 gapped at .035. I have all mode and config switches to the off position and have main rev limiter set on 6000 and trigger set to 3000. Any ideas where else to check to sort this out? Tonight I'm going ohm the plug wires to see if one is bad then reinstall my out module to see if the problem is something other that module.

Your wisdom is appriciated as always.

Ment to say reinstall OLD module.

You can pretty much run any of the coil-per-cylinder coils except for the ones that have the metal fins sticking out.

We will have mounting brackets for the LS2 coils, 12573190, should have pics soon.

The coils in the pictures are the LS1 coils 12558948 (which you can run but will need to figure out your own mount)

Does that help?

Bob

Do you have the LS1 mounting brackets yet?

Also, since you are an E85 guy.... What plugs and gap are you running with this set up?

Brackets are still "in development" I'm running LS1 coils mounted to bosses that are welded to the valve covers.

I'm running AC CR43TS and they are gapped at .035 if I remember correctly.
