Just do a compression test or have a shop do it. You may be fine. It's amazing how well these cars can run with something wrong though so get it checked and you'll know.

So when a cam goes flat where does the metal go?

It grinds up the bearings, the crank, and the turbo... Then the grit hides in the oil galleys and oil coolers for after the rebuild so it can happen again.

No metal in oil galleys. Oil cooler was changed

? All throughout the engine like Earl mentioned. Cut filter open and look. Still needs a compression/leakdown test if HG is believed to be bad. By my statement, I was referring to the 2k miles I put on my car with 6 bent rods and lifted heads that resealed. I was amazed at how well it ran with so much wrong. Pan was a starry night when we pulled it off from all the bearing material from the bent rods riding on them wrong, but I still drove it to the shop.
