ok, I installed new pads, and sanded the rotors down a bit before installing. Now they squeak insanely every time she stops. I am going to take it in to have the rotors refinished. This doesnt mean the pads are ruined are they?

Scott

This is what I wold do:

scuff them up pretty good (the rotors)

get a board (about 2.5 feet) and some sandpaper (medium grit) that will cover said board (maybe a belt for a belt sander?), sand the pads so they are flat again. This should be done with new pads too, not necessary though.

wirebrush all the dust/rust off of the caliper brackets/springs/clips, also clean the pins and re-grease (re-grease is important)

You could get that permamtex disc brake quiet and put it on the pads, the mechanic I worked for uses a silicone grease on all those parts. Only grease what you need (where the pads touch the caliper, pins, pad clips-only there the pads ride on the clips). It will attract dirt and the like so there is no need to have extra grease on there

Who's pads did you use? Factory I hope. Also, is the hardware kit sold separately from the pads? If so, buy the hardware kit and replace.

Well I went on an eclipse board and a guy had the EXACT same problem. Someone chimed in and said this:

What happens is the pads leading edge hits the rotor, digs in and chatters. When you get on the brakes hard the pistons hold the pad flat against the rotor so they cant move, dont vibrate, and therefor dont squeel. Perfectly normal. The brake quiet or other sticky products will help to adhere the pad to the piston so it doesnt move as much, and also servers to add mass to the pad and dampen the vibration. Its like dynamat for your brakes.

maybe I should buy some of this stuff. What grade of sandpaper can I sand the rotors down with?

By the way, everything was greased.

Hence the sanding.

Update:

Ok, well, the cheapest quote I got to refinish the rotors was 82 bucks, which made me go after this myself. I removed the rotors and pads, and game them both a hell of a sanding by hand. (my arm is numb). I then cleaned the caliper area where the pads are held, and put "brake quiet" adhesive on both ends. (put plenty on! :)). Reinstalled everything and so far no squealing. We will see in a week how we do.

Well after two weeks back to the squealing, im starting to think its the pads, and Im gonna ditch em.

Might want to try oem pads,I'm the parts mgr. at a Mitsubishi dealer,Joe Gibson Mitsubishi,Spartanburg SC 800-789-1296,I sell alot of these pads every week, even to local brake shops.I'm not saying there aren't any aftermarket pads that won't work but there is some reason I sell so many. Also sell alot of the hardware kits,we also use BG products, that seems to help,it is a treatment that applies to surface of the pads.Make sure all of the hardware is installed correctly.Hope this helps.
