I am curious does anyone know who or where I can have a custom hood scoop made? I don't care of what material I just have a specific scoop that I want done.

To start with, we can fabricate a hood scoop to your specs and looks, but I do question why, and where you want to put it?

A scoop on or near the existing hood bulge would really not serve any useful function. The intake air opening or filter is no where near it, so that function is negated.

If you want to cool the engine compartment with air flowing through, I have a simple n0-cost solution. :)

Just remove the rubber weatherstrip molding at the base of the windshield under the hood. This will provide an exit for cooling air flow which will greatly reduce under hood temps. :D:cool:

I always understood that removing that rubber strip at the hood line was ineffective since its a high pressure area and will cause air to push in.

it would be possible to hook the air intake up to a hood scoop in the location of the stock bulge without too much work, but it would be rather pointless from a performance standpoint since that's a pretty "dead" spot on the hood as far as the aero is concerned.

Thanks for the replies everyone, its much appreciated! The scoop is actually for my 01 GS. I've attached a pic of the one I would like done.

That my friend is genuine internet BS! :)

I can hold my hand there with the car not moving and feel the massive amount of hot air leaving the engine compartment, and I know when the car is in motion then LOTS of hot air is flowing out.

I was thinking about grafting in the flaps from a 81 z28 hood scoop in the back of my hood scoop. I just dont know what it would look like. It would be functional

things change quickly once the car gets moving and a high pressure area builds up at the base of the windshield. you probably can't do this with your car, but my old 71 Nova and my current 86 Camaro both have basic heaters without AC and have vents in the kick panels that you can open up to get some airflow.. they take the air from the base of the windshield, and there is pretty decent airflow coming out of those vents at speeds as low as about 15mph.

there is a reason the engineers that were working on the GNX put the vents in the fenders and not in the hood- they could take advantage of the relatively straight and fast airflow around the sides of the car to actually "suck" the hot air out of the engine compartment... look at C4 and newer Corvettes and notice where they put the extractor vents- right behind the front wheels.

fun experiment that you can do- find a way to glue some short pieces of yarn to your car in various places and go for a drive, maybe have someone follow with a video camera and get your car from at all angles... use some sort of a glue that comes off easily and doesn't damage the paint.. the strings at the rear edge of the hood- about the last foot or so- will probably be pointing towards the front of the car at highway speeds. pull up behind another car or truck and things will get really counter intuitive..

there are a whole bunch of threads (pardon the pun) on this and other aerodynamic stuff over at www.pro-touring.com in the "Advanced Tech and Performance Discussion" area.

I read it before and I learned it early on in my 85 hotair. I had removed that rubber strip, a while later when I had a radiator hose spring a leak. At a stop the windshield would steam up and steam would be coming out through the back. When I drove the car it would stop venting, but at each stoplight and stop sign it would vent out.
This can easily be tested just zip tie a soup can under the hood some where and put a smoke bomb in there. And go for a ride!

There goes all my cowl hood sales. I hope no chevy guys are reading this. I'm just picturing you hanging out the window with your hand under the hood. :D

So curious, Brian or Nick, do you think you could make that type of a scoop? Not concerned of what's on the side of the scoop, just the scoop itself and if so what kind of a price are we looking at? Thanks guys for your time, its GREATLY appreciated!

Great advice!

I did that way back when and picked up a .1 and 1 MPH. I have my weatherstrip cut in 2 pieces and remove part on driver side for normal driving. Keep it in the trunk in case I get caught in the rain or when I wash the car.

I think the closest thing you could get to what would be a good bases would be a cowl hood. You could cut the angle front out to get you the opening look & then put GNX vents or similar on the side of the cowl.
They make a sheet metal hood that could weld on to a flat regal hood. I should have one here that was damaged in shipping I can set on a GN for picture purposes. You could cut & modify that to what you wanted.
This would get you the general shape. This could be cut & welded for the look desired. I notice the hood in the pic slopes down near the windshield. That could be done to a cowl hood as well.

We are also making a Buick 2" Cowl hood, GN hood & an Oldsmobile cutlass 2" steel cowl hood. christmas is the expected date on those... maybe sooner.

maybe buy one from a car that had one and steal it guts to mod into yours. like a flapper that opened a "Y" fitting to the stock air tube and the other opening was the inside pass headlight that has a screen over it. hell you could use the vacuum motor from say an 80's corvette headlight.

you know it would be baddass if you got one that worked,

have a little button on the dash that says "RAM AIR" like the pontiacs had in the day
