New knock sensor. Borrowed a torque wrench for 14 inch lbs. It never clicked so I kept tightening. Quit and found that the wrench doesn’t click, so I’ve gone way past where it should have been tightened. Sensor had some red loctight on the threads. Can I back it off & tighten it to specs or should I try again with a new one? Don’t want to have to get at it again. (can’t run any tests on running engine. too many parts to install first) Thanks.

AI Overview

No, a knock sensor that has been overtightened should not be reused as it could be damaged and may not function properly, potentially leading to inaccurate readings or even failure due to internal stress from the excessive torque applied during installation.

Not sure I buy that. Unless ya went crazy on the over torquing. That’s mainly for grounding(the sensor grounds to the block).

It’s nothing more than a microphone that listens for certain frequencies.

Loosen & retorque. See how it goes. Worse comes to worse buy a new one.

The sensor is an electrical item, threads should be clean for good contact.
Gnttype shows 14 ft*lbs as opposed to inch lbs. To me, 10-14ft*lbs seems reasonable.
If it’s still working, you should expect to see lots of knock counts during cranking. But a new sensor is still a good idea if you don’t trust it.

Considering how important the knock sensor is, I'd get a new one.
It's cheap insurance.
