I have a spare set of 8445 heads here in the garage I plan to do a little homeade head port job. I know I know, home port jobs are junk and nothing like Champion port jobs but I simply dont have the money. I have a set of heads at the machine shop now getting a new valve job, seals, springs, etc. I'm using the set from the machine shop for my 4.1L motor for now but I plan to do a little port work on my spare heads for the future. Are there any good threads showing where and how much to port? Thanks! ----Jeremy
 
You'd be amazed at how good home port jobs can work. Remember, the turbos do most of the work in our cars.

Just cleanup the bowl area without going "hog" wild, then do your port matching and smoothing of the overall port. Don't go crazy and hog out too much.

I do believe that there are some books from Ruggles out there with port designs for our heads.
 
There are several good threads on porting Jeremy. I'm just starting my heads right now so I've only gotten 2 of the intake bowls done. Here's a pic of the first one. All you have to do is to remove whatever impedes flow but do it uniformly. This is just doing the rough work with a die grinder and cutting bit so it's still a little rough looking. When I get further alon I'll be posting the rest of the pics in the B4Black section for the guys there.:biggrin:

Search for board member Pablo...he did his own heads not too long ago and had a homemade flowbench to gauge his work and improvements. Very cool stuff...
 
Thanks for the info guys. I have done a little port work on an old set ofMonte SS 305 heads we used on a 350 motor. Seemed like it gained a ton of power but the 305 heads also boost compression so that probably where I felt the most gain.
