I just bought an 86 GN from the original owner. It has ORIGINAL paint that is cracking. My question is does the paint need to be stripped before repainting?

ONLY if you want it to look nice!! Yes, if the paint is checked or cracked, you WILL need to strip it completely in order to get a paint job to NOT look like Macco or your 3yr old painted it.

If it is just cracking in areas, just those areas need to be sanded off. The sides usually dont crack much and if the paint is ok, it can be used as a primer.

the factory paint is laquer todays paint is enamel i dont think they will be compadable.

body shops can't paint with laquer anymore

strip it all off.laquer and enamel paints are old tech, newly refinished urethane paint is the best. you will be much happier in the long run if you strip all that old junk paint off..
