I've been using a BDP1600 Samsung for about 5 months. The last firmware update I did totally screwed it up and I can't get through an entire disc.

I'll post if this ever gets fixed, but go buy a Sony or LG instead. LG if you need it for netflix.

Don't fall into the trap.. this sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Stick with Buicks!

I have one of the first Panasonic Blue Ray Players and man that thing is slow to start.

I will be buying an Oppo player hopefully soon. Expensive but well worth it.

PS3 slim and don't look back.
We have an original PS3 also.

blu ray's

if your into watching it in hi def then you would enjoy it. basically if you want to see the cellulite and pimples on the booty then go for it. there are alot of good brands and LG has been around for awhile, people just didnt know that lucky oil and gold star electronics merged therefore LG was born so they've been in the business awhile. depending on what your looking for feature wise will determine what you should get. if your a gamer then PS3 is the best option as it's versitle. if you go cheap then you get cheap, and i know samsung makes some decent tv's and stuff but honestly most of the stuff out there are made at the same place and just have different parts in them per specs of the maker. Just do your homework and you'll be ok, just thought i'd throw my experiance in there since you guys help me out with alot of stuff and just trying to help someone out.

To be honest I will never own a Samsung anything. Their tech suppoort system is a nightmare and they do not call back.

Purchased a samsung dvd writer for a computer and they didn't send a driver disc. Okay go online and download it right? Wrong, $29.00 for access to the driver I need. I only paid $29.00 for the writer so I tossed it in the garbage rather than waste the money returning it. My daughter has a samsung phone I need to update, sorry we won't help you was the reply, pay someone to get what you need.

My brother returned the first and is on his second samsung LCD TV and it is giving him trouble. My dad's samsung tv is out of warranty and giving him trouble, so he's out of luck.

Too many other manufacturers who still care about the customer goodbye samsung.

samsung

it's a decent brand, but then again me and my wife only have sony branded anything in the house. i swear if that made a fridge we'd have it. she just brought home a 50ish inch flat from her work and we put it in the living room. had the cable tech out and he was like wtf is with all the sony stuff. told him we prefer it, then again we had a sony that was given to us by a freind because the tube was out ( projection tv ) and we had it replaced 2 x's afterwards. the tv repair shop rep said that these models had this problem alot. so it really depends on what it is, some people like samsung and i can completely understand about tech support. when you call the customer service you get some guy who can barely speak english and you can't understand him anyway. guess that's what you get when you subcontract your tech support to some 3rd world country.

when i worked for radioshack in corporate sales we had our guys go over seas and tell us about warehouses the size of 10-15 football fields and each had assembly lines running the length of them. this warehouse produced phones, this was when 900mhz wireless phones were in and were going to 2.4gig. anyway our rep told us the only differance between alot of models was the parts inside. you could walk the warehouse floor and see panasonic, sony, motorola ( when they made those home flip phones ) and just about any other brand in there side by side. the only differance was the specs that your people wanted inside and features your company personnally requested.

I ended up finding some old firmware from the net and was able to fix the player with that.

My opinion is to buy items that companies are "known for" or "built on".

I bought this Blu Ray player because it got good reviews on picture quality, matched my TV, had the netflix option, and was cheap.

I would have bought the Sony if it had a netflix option.

What's Oppo.. is that a brand?

why do they need the firmware updated? is it that hard for them to make a BluRay player that plays BluRay discs? i thought that they created the BluRay standard to be an easy and better upgrade over the dvd players that came out in the late 90's.
i've got one of the first dvd players that was widely available on the market- i paid $600 for it in direct from Philips/Magnavox the fall of 1997, and it still works great today. the remote works from other rooms, and all the buttons on both the remote and player are laid out nicely and easy to use. it has never not played a movie- when i want to watch a movie, i know i'll be able to watch a movie and not have to worry about it freaking out halfway thru unless there is something wrong with the disc.
some people have given me crap over paying that much for a dvd player when they can buy a brand new cheap one for $35, and a decent one for around $100- but i've had mine for 12 years, and i know of some people that have gone thru 4 or 5 of the $100 models in that same time period. so really, i didn't spend that much more over time- and mine has more usable features and is more reliable.

oppo brand

never heard of it but then again you never know what new brands are out. when i worked for radioshack we had sample brands that you never heard of and stuff that didn't work like they were suppose to or claimed to. brands are a dime a dozen stick to what you know. just because something is on sale or inexpensive then expect to get what you paid for it. sometimes you can come across a clearance that is way cheaper then normal price but those can be closeouts or defects, or any other reason to move product, might even be a firesale you just happened to run across.

Yes Oppo is a brand name. Per the reviews I have been reading up in the AVS forum, it has the best PQ for a Blue Ray player. The player can also be modified to play any Blue Ray/DVD discs from around the world (MULTI REGION CODEFREE). It can also be modified for the audio analog portion which some people need/want based on their Audio setup.

Most players and most TV's today all have some sort of firmware upgrades available. One needs to understand, the High Definition technology is still new and changing. So it's nice to be able to upgrade the firmware to fix a problem or possibly add a new feature.

I myself need to upgrade the firmware on my TV (Pioneer Pro-151FD). Although the problems it's suppose to fix I don't use. But I still want to add it.

FYI, Oppo cannot be found in your local BestBuy, Sears, etc., stores. Check them out on Ebay and you will find the modifications that can be done to them. I myself don't need the player to play all the regions so it will be cheaper for me.

So, did the update mess it up?

I have had my regular Samsung DVD player for over 9 years now , and it works great ---

I have a Sony KDS50XBR HDTV that got rave reviews. After about 2 years the optical block had problems. I had the Sony extended warranty but nobody local wanted to deal with Sony. So after several frustrating phone calls, they said to call Sears. So Sears sent out a guy and replaced the part. Sony was sued over this part and had to extend their warranty to cover it, as it costs $1500! So no more Sony for me. Today I was looking at this website Consumer Complaints about Samsung TV
because I was thinking of buying a Samsung 32" LCD TV. From what I can tell, most if not all of the big names just plain suck. So my advice is buy the extended warranty if you really need to upgrade your electronic toys. Now I'm just thinking of keeping my old Toshiba CRT TV until it quits, which might not be for many years.

DAMN, I have a Samsung Bluray that is 2 years old and works flawlessly. Also have 3 Samsung LCD TV's , 52" series 7, a 46" and a 42" that I got for my little one to play video games on. All of them have amazing pictures and have never had an issue with them.
I have had several of their cell phones, nothing but problems. Their support sucks bad.
