If you want 10's all day, then you need to build the car as if you were going for low 9's, and it will survive. Your engine is ok but it would be a good 11 second engine to keep it reliable. The tranny needs quite a bit more work if you want to always run 10's. If you only want to kiss the 10's once in a while then you should be fine, but these engines can be grenades with just a minor mistake, and sometimes everything can be perfect and still grenade. bison did a car a while ago that was a stock lower end and it did low 10's beautifully, until one of the pistons cracked. If you want to build the car to what you want, then write everything down first, gather the parts you need within your budget, and build the car you want. Doing it piece meal will cost more and aggravate you to the point of getting out of it.

hey! thanks for the advice. That's what i'm in the process of doing now except i'm not writing everything out for the car as a whole. I'm approaching it from different angles, such as getting suspension sorted out, followed by, fuel, then brakes, electrical, so on and so forth. Since I don't daily drive the car, it's not too frustrating to me to have the car down for a while. I did recognize the transmission was a weak link the moment I pulled it off the truck, so last week, I purchased an Extreme Automatics Stage III transmission. Now, while I wait for that, I am going to build the rear suspension.

Everyone is saying just drop in some cheap shocks and leave the springs alone, but I'm on the same page as what you are saying. I want to build this car for what I want it to do, not for what it can do now, and if it means, saving up a little more money for adjustable this, or variable that, then I don't really mind. In my eyes, suspension is the foundation for quickness, so I do not want to take shortcuts in this department.

the message boards are acting weird for me today. if I delete this post, the one above it deletes as well.

Those UMI control arms will work just fine. If your doing that, might as well get the matching lowers. That car underneath looks pretty scary. If you get an H&R sway bar I wouldn't worry about airbags.

Yeah, I'm kinda weird about keeping parts the same. For instance if I got UMI uppers, I'd want UMI lowers too, and then when it came time to do front control arms, they would probably have to be UMI as well. It's like an automotive OCD thing Lol

I'm sure Mr Spool is referring to the need for everything to working perfect from tune to heavy duty parts. As you start making more power you will find the weak links.
thanks I am,the mid to low 10 sec range requires one to go through almost the whole car depending on the frequency of the hits.

I ended up purchasing the rear suspension. QA1 shocks, UMI adjustable upper and lower control arms, cargo springs, and I'm debating over the choice of buying air bags or an anti roll bar.

sub 7 second 1/8ths will render the car undependable?! i really hope not! i
I was referring to the mid to low 10 sec passes, these cars require a lot of attention at this power level along with most of the drivetrain.there is a lot less margin for tuning mistakes, weak fuel pumps, bad voltage, marginal wiring, etc.then getting the whole combo to work together to lay it down is another discussion.no disrespect intended

no no! i love hearing the feedback and advice from the people who have done this or are currently doing this. I have plenty of experience building fast cars, but i have absolutely no problem admitting i am as rookie as they come when it comes to building these cars. I am treating this as if i've never touched a car before. I have a lot of respect for the process of a build and Im just hoping to go about things the right way.

its the fuel injection and chips and stuff that intimidate me
that's the stuff that makes and breaks;)if you have someone near you that if familiar with the tuning of these cars it can save a lot of headache.

Reggie doesn't live too too far from me. I'm not sure how knowledge on tuning he has, but he sure seems helpful!

A short drive to papa Lou's might be in order so you can have someone that knows these cars well.

Go down to the bottom of the main page and Lou's in the sponsor section. If I had his number I'd post it for you.
