I just recieved notification of my emission test.My cat has been gutted and she runs fairly rich. I know I will have to lean it out but should I also get a TT emission chip? Or just throw a Cat on it and be done with it since I also have an Electric cut out I was planning on throwing on. For some reason I thought this car would be exempt being over 20 years old.

Ur confusing inspection with emissions bud I think. All that really matters is what comes out the exhaust and registers on the computer which are online and linked to CT DMV to cut down on fraud. Fraud still occurs of course but not as often.

I know people who worked at emissions that payed their houses off in a few years from the shaddy things that went on there resulting in pay-offs from those that could not pass. Depending on where you go they will look for a cat but unlikely they will inspect whether its gutted or not. There are other places to go vs. DMV.

You won't be exempt till it is 25 years old. Put a stock chip that matches your injectors in it and put a cat on it (it will fail nox with no cat). Tell the emissions station you have studded snows and they will do a two speed idle test and you should pass.

Hi,
Yes, unfortunately, without a CAT,you wont pass emissions.Standards vary from state to state, but generally, you will have to beat 1% CO and be under 150PPM Hydrocarbons to pass.Only a converter can get it that clean. CT is a pretty state,so I understand where they are coming from. Here in Texas, only certain areas are tested, like Houston, where I live. My Regal just passed the limit, at 25 years old,but I'm still running the cat, trying to run clean, and fast,if possible. Good luck with your testing!

Definately get a cat. on there for the test.

I hook up my EGR pulser as well that runs the solenoids, since my regular TT chip and Extender Extreme chip have no EGR code in them so that helps pass the NOX test, a functioning EGR greatly helps NOX.

They will look under the car for a cat. and they can't tell it's gutted and probably won't care much even if it fails.

I guess if you have studded snows you may get a different test but I doubt they won't look at the tires first to check.

An emissions chip is a good idea if the car isn't running all that great with a regular one, especially if it has EGR code in it since most chips don't now, and the car runs better.

Change/clean the plugs and oil also if it needs it.

I have a cat that I throw on the GN every two years for about the 1 hour it takes to drive to emissions, get tested and drive back home.:D No other changes to the car and it always passes.

I went though this two years ago. The registration came in the mail, but it said I had to get the car emission tested before they will renew (at the time the car was with out a tranny). So I sent a check to the DMV for the registration. They cashed it. When I got the tranny, I had to get temporary plates to bring it over to have it tested. I ran Eric’s Emissions chip, fuel set at 38#, But I did have a gutted cat. So it failed HC test (just barely). It failed, but right after the test, I brought the emissions test report over to DMV with my paid registration. And they renewed it. It had to be tested. It did not matter that it failed. It just had to be tested.
I guess you have the 30-day window for a retest, which you are considered “in compliance”. But I did get it renewed for two years. I never brought it back for a retest.
I am also due again this year.

Where in CT are you? I am in Guilford.

I would get a Emissions chip from TT for the 65's
If you need to borrow stock pipe setup with a new cat I have the setup.

emissions

I guess I will be buying a 3" high flow cat and I have the dump pipe/electric cutout ready to be put on.So I guess I will also buy the emission chip from TT. I sent in my renewel and my check already and recieved a notice saying my registration was payed for but not renewed until my emissions test was done. It's going to be a pain in the asz since the cat is welded right onto the down pipe.Oh well, complaining isn't gonna make it easier. Thanks for the responses. As for my location I am in Wolcott.

Online

It's funny I just scrolled down this thread and everyone is online!!! Doesn't anyone in CT have a job. By the way I am at work.

I guess I will be buying a 3" high flow cat
Remember that cats are designed for the engine - if they are too big they won't get hot, and if they are too small they will be a restriction.

If you are only installing it for the sake of passing emissions testing, then you're gonna pull it back off, I would err on the side of "too small" instead of "high flow".

Both of my cars pass with a cat on them. A running test (on the dyno) can be unforgiving, that is why you should test in the winter months (nov-apr) when you can do a two speed idle test. There are ways to help a borderline car pass if you fail your first test. Good luck.

AJ, you can borrow my community catalytic converter if you want. I have the elbow, dp, gasket and all hardware ready. All you have to do is remove yours and install mine. Its worked on at least 10 dfferent TR's around here. The block learn will need to be at or near 128 at the testing speed. It should not be below 128. The engine needs to be hot for the test. Request that they leave your car idling while setting up for testing. You need to keep the cat as hot as possible to work at its peak. Additionally you will need egr function. I have gone through with both of mine and no problems at all. Dont attempt it without a cat. The car is exempt when the model year is 25 years old.

Nothing works as well as an OEM cat in my experiences and it has more cross section and length than any of the high flow units. Nothing even comes close to a known good stocker. There is no cheap aftermarket high flow cat that will flow the exhaust volumes an engine over 400 hp will be creating without causing a big restricion.

Bison is correct, use a stock/factory cat and make sure the cat is HOT. I have a similar setup that I bolt on my cars every two years and take them off and put it in the shed. I left my egr on both cars for this purpose since at WOT they are not in use anyway. Lucky for you guys you can do this at work

I never had any trouble passing with my Random Tech. Hi-Flow 3" cat.

Use what fits your exhaust system.

I doubt they are gonna leave it running in the winter but a 180 stat. may help you, I have passed all the tests with the 160 however.

A decent good running chip helps more than anything, dumping fuel for the sake of dumping fuel may work well on race cars, but did nothing but ruin my gas mileage and more quickly foul plugs going back to the kenne bell chip days. :p

EGR helps reduce NOX a ton.

If you need any help with your EGR I can loan you my box that gives 35% EGR pulsing over .55 volts TPS.

It installs rather easy inline to the TPS connector and to the factory EGR power and connectors.

They don't seem to care when I use it on both cars, assuming you don't have a chip with EGR code in it like an emissions chip would have.

If you have a good functioning EGR that would help.

i know you guys are saying 25 years before the car is exempt, but i was wondering if CT is the same as maryland, in that since they dont make the regal anymore, discontinued, it is only 20 years til it is exempt. this past summer i put historic tags on my 86 ttype and have no more emissions to worry about:biggrin: just wondering?!
