Engine noise diagnosis help - knocking / tapping

Check for crankshaft endplay. The sound could be reluctor contact at the crankshaft sensor if there is excessive play. Could be major thrust wear which will also cause more damage if ignored.

It's hard to imagine how these crank/ balancer end bolts come loose--being originally torqued to over 200ft-lbs?? I would guess its just wear of "stuff" between bolt head & crank threads and/ or stretch of the bolt itself...?

but they do.... I would guess that most of those that back out have been removed before and replaced w/o torquing the bolt.... just tightening the crap out of it and thinking 'surely that's tight enough..' 215 ft-lbs (I believe is the spec) is pretty tough to achieve... everyone should check their's if halfway convenient... failure results in disaster...

These bolts were also installed from the factory WITHOUT "Locktite"! I always use (Blue or Red) loctite when installing the ballancer bolt and I haven't had a problem with them ever coming loose.

Seems like a common problem with them coming loose and thats why I started to locktite mine.

Alright, what things need to come off to access the balancer bolt?

I see the intercooler must come out. What about the small fan, pulley, etc.

Just the intercooler fan and use about a 6" extension and a 1 and 1\8th inch socket. The large serpentine pully is hollow.

8uwith6 Im having the same issues as both of you. I pulled the drivers side valve cover today and notice some side to side movement on the last rocker towards the firewall. I thing im missing a washer at the c clamp on the very end, but can this movement be a sign of a wiped cam? shore hope not,Turkey Rod Run coming this weekend. this stinks

just wanted to let everyone know, we jacked up the drivers side and removed the wheel and found that the last bolt (manifold) bottom rear,was bearly on and very loose.torqued it down and the noise is gone.youve got to be kidding me.thats how crazy these things can drive you.hope this helps someone else.you can really get into it from that prospective.if nothing else,its easy enough to try.good luck. now ill make the big show....

Well, it's not the balancer bolt or the exhaust manifold bolts. Did the ole' foot on torque wrench trick to reach 215 ft/lbs. Only broke one socket adapter in the process. Did not measure any excessive lash on the crank thrust.

Tightened the spring bolts on the downpipe, maybe this will help. The torque spec was 20 ft/lbs.

Next I go after the valvetrain. After that I'll break out my customer service representative (a 4lb sledge hammer).

Most everyone has missed the key words in your first post. I had the same exact problem b4. The knocking was only at certian speeds under very light load. Those are the key words. Nothing to do with RPM. Now take my advice and pull you rearend cover and find your chpped gear. You can thank me later LOL. :biggrin:

have u taken a Stethoscope or mechainics ears to the front of the motor. mine is making a knocking sound as well. come to find out its the water pump. the pully is bent and it knocks at idle and goes away when i bring the rpms up. just something to look into

I'll pull the rear cover and see what's going on. Never know where these noises emanate from.

I saw the water pump had a couple of drips of antifreeze coming from the vent hole on the bottom. Maybe it is gonzo and that's the problem.

I had a water pump knocking on my car last august or so, same deal, rattle at idle and various RPM, pump took care of it. The problem with these sounds are that there are a hundred things that can cause them!
