How fast has the 1984-1985 blocks have gone and survived?
what is the fastest the 1984-1985 can be pushed reliably? NO CAPS, NO GIRDLE.

I am asking about STOCK short block NO CAPS, NO GIRDLE any type of intake (H/A or converted to intercooled)

11.08@125 ported irons LC2 setup. Would still be alive it the 200 had of shifted!!

I think Banning rans 10's for a long while on one. Maybe still does??
They are basically the same as 86-87 blocks.

The look of the 84-85 block is scary looking (weak) i took a quick look at an 87 today and two things jumped out at me, one was the front where the turbo oil return goes. that part on 86-87 is thicker and better reinforced and second was the area that the oil pan sits on, it is also thicker on the 86-87.

anyway good to see that those blocks hold up.

Anymore out there?

I'm sure there are several. I doubt every guy out there that builds a 4.1 can afford caps and girdle. It isn't like the 109 is made out of alien metal:rolleyes:

It will be fine! Continue with your build. Don't stress about it man. My car tips the scale at over 3800 lbs easy. I ran 29-35 psi made like 6 track passes and 4 street races all on the stock bottom end. I blew one head gasket due to a punctured map line and fixed it. Used felpro gaskets and arp head studs from a stage block. 109 studs will not work! If you have the 20 bolt pan like I did I just threw the front cover I had on my 109 on it and the cam too.

How fast is one issue.
For "How long" is another.

You dont have money tied into it so who cares.. If someone ran 9.9 with a stock block, crank, rods.. doesnt mean anything. Unless they are bracket racing the motor and doing it over and over again. One hit wonders.. are just that.

Flip this question.. how fast on an 86/87 stock short block No Caps No girdle?

10 second passes are probably not out of the question. Trying to do so on a repetitive basis.. thats another.

Whats stronger.. a std std NA crank or a 20/20 turbo crank :D

I'd say the N/A crank..

I've gone 11:30's with a junk short block with I think an N/A crank.

It's been posted on here a guy running 10:50's or lower with a stock short block.

..

Which block has experienced more detonation in its lifetime? Chances are its the 109. Maybe the owner of the hot air engine used 87 octane. What's difference between a STD. and a 20/20 crank..... it only bothers you if you know its there. ;)

i would have guessed the Hot Air????
Hotter Air = more detonation
Colder Air = Less detonation
I am not helping, am i?

If youre not making at least 600hp you are not breaking any block/crank because of the power. So if your under 130mph in the quarter you shouldnt have to worry about a thing unless you are detonating. A lot detonation at 300hp is not the same as a tiny bit at 600+hp. Big difference. More cylinder pressure more problems with detonation. A little KR is no tok.

tok=????

i tried looking "tok" up before asking but came up empty

the motor i have is 14 bolt, do these statements also apply to it or just the 20 bolt motors?
Do you detonate your engines? Are you planning on making 600+hp? If not then you have little to worry about. The mains/caps are the same in all the 3.8 production blocks and thats where they are the weakest. Based on your other thread about running 11.99 you would be about 250hp shy of even having to think about the block being a problem even if you have enough power to run 11.99.

1-Yes
2-No
3-11.99 changed to easy 11.50s
Thanks for your help and your replies.
