This may not be a bright idea, and I can't remember where I read it.

I read that the extra 3-4 qts of trans fluid that is trapped inside the torque converter & trans case, can be purged out by idling the engine & letting the internal trans hydraulic pump mostly empty the trans, by leaving the pan's drain plug removed (if you have one) or by running the cooler lines into a jug.

does this seem wise? you wouldn't run the engine without oil !

on the other hand, there's not much load on an idle trans, and it doesn't get hot unless you drive it around.

it is ok... but...

It is not good for either the pump or the bearings in the converter to be run dry , however just to start and let drain some more wouldnt hurt anything. But do not leave it open for long after that. and , fluid will be very airated so I would wait till next day to fire up with new stuff.

Thanks, Bruce.

No, I certainly wouldn't let the trans idle "dry" while I go get a cup of coffee  , just for a minute or so to purge out more of the fluid.

Or, in my case while trying to figure out why it would not shift into OD after a 'simple' fluid change, you can change it again, and then again during troubleshooting, all within 500 miles. Should be flushed now!:D :D :D

I'm dragging up and old topic but I have two questions.
First question: If you want to convert over to the Mobil 424, would the amount left in the torque converter be the proper amount to get the 70/30 mix of Dexron and Mobil 424?
Second question: A long time ago, I remember asking Bruce about thoroughly draining the trans. He suggested drop the pan, leave a large catch pan under there and spin the engine a dozen revolutions (with the computer unplugged) or so to "pump" out most of the remaining fluid. Does this sound like the right way to do it?
Thanks!

Hehehehe

No, I lied. What you really do is get out a plasma cutter. Cut trans in half at the band. Put both pieces on end to drain overnight. Bag and ship... :D

As far as 70/30 mix I would not sweat it. I would just refill with straight tractor. The remaining fluid will blend to make mix. Then after next change start mixing in bottle before refilling you will be fine. It is not that crtical to get it all out. Your new "mixture" will work absolutly fabulous!!!!!

How are things in the desert corner of the states, Jack? How you all been ? Hope all is well in your neck of the....... ahhhh....... Desert.... :)

Rather than spinning the whole motor over, could you just remove the torque converter bolts and rotate the TC only to do the same thing or does it not work that way???
