I'm looking for a handgun for home protection that my wife could use if needed while I'm away. I know little to nothing about them. A Ruger LCR plus P with Crimson Laser Grip has been recommended to me by someone else. Is that a good choice or should I look at something else? Where might be the best place to buy one?

Your wife will need to decide what she likes. My advice would be to find a local range that rents guns. Have a few choices and go shoot them, and then decide.
FWIW, I've shot the LCR and it's a fine gun, but not for me. A good friends wife does carry the LCR and she likes it.

I have the S&W version, known as the Governor. It's a very cool gun, and my wife has shot it with no issues. You can run .410 shotshell, .45acp, & .45 Colt through it.
Again... Let your wife shoot some of both revolvers & semi-auto handguns. She'll let you know what she likes & what she doesn't. My wife doesn't like shooting revolvers, so we're getting her a semi-auto. I brought her home a Springfield Armory XD-s a couple weeks ago, and she doesn't like the polymer grip on it. So I get to keep that one for myself...
Next time I'll take her with me to the store...K.
Id vote for the judge also for the best home defense handgun just becuase it shoots a 410 shotgun shell. Chances are your wife will hate how much it kicks tho. Ive never been in a situation but can imagine it being easy to miss even close targets with a bullet when you are scarred and nervous. So scatter gun gets my vote.

A 9mm is a happy medium between home defense and concealed carry for you AND your wife. I know a few women that carry a Glock 26. The ruger SR9 is a nice full size. I personally carry a GLOCK 19 though. It's a size between the full size (21) and compact (26). I am definately GLOCK biased, they're indestructible. It's nice also to have a 33 round extended clip in my glovebox while I'm out for a late night drive... 
Get her a damn shotgun. Not a lot of training and if you use the right ammo it will spread the shot out enough to take out a wall. A 20 guage with a cylinder choke will give more than enough coverage for a large room and the sound of a pump loading will make the intruder have to clean out his/her shorts out for a week.

Please make sure your wife is prepared to use the weapon you choose. Many overlook this, a gun is an inanimate object, it takes the "delivery system" to use it. Make sure you ask her "are you willing to take a life". She needs to answer this truthfully before she ever might need to make that decision. The "gun" doesn't care who uses it, so if your wife isn't committed, maybe the "badguy" will be....there is now a firearm involved. There are many good resources to get started on the quest for "mindset". Google "Grossman' Siddel, Aayoob, Saurez" amongst others.

If you want a handgun, I would get a Ruger Sr9..I love mine..plus if your a bad shot it holds 17 rounds!....But my homedefense is an AR15 with red dot/laser/flashlight and pistol grip, cant beat that IMO.. I also agree with charlie though...hard to dodge a shotgun

My $.02.....All the "big gun" comments makes me wonder... What's the REAL intent, when choosing a home defense weapon...
Is it to shoot thru 4 walls, go a 1/4 mi, and kill someone in the next block?? Or, is it to actually defend one's self in the confines of the home?
A scared homeowner has about a 2-5% chance of hitting the target w/ a single projectile weapon. Whereas, with a shot shell weapon, it becomes "close is good enough". [And, you don't kill someone down the block.]
Break into my place, and you won't get it w/ the AR, or the .38. You WILL get a load of #6/12 ga shot from the Maverick 88.`In my car, it's a Judge. You WILL get a load from the .410 shell. [I may not be able to hear for a month... The perp will never hear, again.!]
Due to the increasing ammo costs, there will no longer be a warning shot fired!

a lot of good info, but remember there are some factors to consider, can your wife operate a semi auto? can she pull back the slide?
some woman find it to hard to do, a firearm that is easy to load is the sig sauer p238 i sell that to more women then men very easy to slide back, and one of the best 380 in the market, and trust me a 380 with some critical defense ammo is very lethal. it is also
a firearm you will carry alot more, i own one and 5 other handguns and its so lite and compact , i normally carry that or my HK

I agree 100%. But IMO if your ar is set with good optics/ flashlight: laser pointer then it wouldn't be a bad choice, especially if you have your

Not a bad choice, AR15's are awesome weapons and can be modified to do anything, but will never be as good as a scatter gun for close range...especially in a home defense situation. As stated before it all boils down to what MRP78's wife is comforatble shooting.
I have a good friend and coworker who had his house broken in to a month ago...in a very nice part of town...while away at work for a week (works on drilling rig). someone got in his wifes car and opened the garage door with her remote and ransacked their house while she was asleep. They went into his 4 yr old sons room and and trashed his dresser looking for anything they could. When my friend got back the next morning his kid said "daddy that monkey scarred me last night". His wife didnt wake up, and the theif left without hurting anyone luckily.
Now, if some turd theif was in my kids room at night i would be so f*cking pissed id honestly probably miss with a regular handgun and im a decent shot. You just have to take into consideration how scary and intense the whole situation would be. If mom feels her kids life is in danger...she can pull the trigger. But she has to be able to hit the target or as "Mini" said it can be taken from her and now the bad guy is armed.

thats crazyy!!!!! a Good bright flashlight attacheted would help put them off guard and mess with their vision...The strobe attachement would be a nice choice ..anyone ever seen these?

DOG'S! DOG'S! DOG'S! Thief's don't like Dog's and they never will....They like to sneak in quietly and not be noticed to bring as less attention to them as possible that's a Fact! A dog is one of the best theft deterrent things anyone can have in their home, Plus these are cool to see right before heading up my front porch

We have a 180 lb Brazilian Mastiff and a stout Boxer that a thief has to get past first, THEN they have me, my wife and my sons to worry about next and we ALL go to the gun range pretty regularly every Sunday and my youngest son (age 12) groups his shots with his 22 within 1/2" @ 25 yrds.. My Beretta PX4 storm and the pump 12 ga shotgun and the thief is definitely in trouble.
