Was curious to know if anyone has ran back to back tests with heavy stock GN wheels (Weighing about 30 lbs.) vs. a set of lightweight aluminum wheels (Weighing about 15-17 lbs.) down the 1/4 mile to see what the time difference would be.

Lighter is better but HOW much difference does it truly make? Anyone make a 1/4 mile run and then swap em to see how much faster the aluminums actually affect the ET or MPH?

You can look at it this way. For a car that runs 13.0 or faster...for every 100 lbs worth of weight removed from the vehicle...is good for a tenth of a second in the quarter.

Im aware of what the formulas are for rotating mass but im looken for REAL WORLD numbers.

rotating weight has approx. 8-10 times the benefit of removing the same amount of "static" weight

different platform but in the l67 world we routinely see a solid tenth going from 21-22 lb factory chrome plated aluminum wheels down to 16 pound 5 spoke pontiac "torque star" wheels

it sounds like you can remove close to 60 pounds in wheel weight ?? sounds like a lot but if so I wouldnt be surprised to see 2 tenths quicker - hopefully someone who has done it sees your post and gives a more difinitive answer for you , of course the faster the combo the less gain from the reduced weight , a stock car would see the largest gain

To me some cars just look "right" with the stock wheels and tires. To me the GN is one of those cars and a tenth here or there isn't worth a wheel change. Unless of course $$ is on the line.

Interesting but I would like to hear real actual #s like Brett said.A 100 lbs is not always a tenth.I have seen people put alum flywheels on and the car slow down.We put alum D/S ,light weight spool and gun drilled axles in our race car and guess what, are you ready.......zippo, nada, no difference.

no race info here but i went from 15x9 at 11 lbs each bare to 23 lbs 17x9.5 rims....the 15x9 were cut down from 15x10's ...i don't even want to post what the 17x9.5 weigh with the 275 40 tire ...its shocking to say the least:eek: ....however less rotating mass= faster
forged light weight 17's are damn expensive.

On a car that runs mid to high tens trapping in the mid to high 120's 60lbs removed from the front wheels/rims was consistently worth .7mph. On a car that could achieve higher trap speeds the benefit is much greater. For 99% of what people own on here it will be worth less and is a waste of time to even think about it.

If the car isnt trapping high mph the gain is much much less with wheel/tire weight reduction.

With stock 15x7's on front with 225 60 & 15x8 widened stockers with 275 60 drag radials, I ran a best of 7.04@98. After switching to Pro Stars 15x3.5 & 15x8 (Same M/T Drag Radial) went best of 6.72@103. These are 1/8 mile times from 2 different trips about a month apart last summer. Same setup other than wheel swap.

Did this on my T Type several years ago...stock T wheels vs. Weld with skinnies on front....MPH was .2 higher, ET no difference....this was a bolt on car that ran 11.70's.........HTH

X2!...Yep!...Example, 500 pounds less = 5 tenths less, approximately.

Claude.

yea but stock T wheels weigh a hell of a lot less then stock GN wheels. i wouldnt expect much difference at all between stock T wheels and a set of Welds. prebably on 5-10 lb difference

nice results  I am sure weather and track conditions were somewhat different but thats a significant gain so you would think the rolling stock was a good part of the gain.

you made that gain in the 1/8 which is where I would think the majorityof the gain would be made since you have less rotating weight to get up to speed... allthough at the traps on a fast trapping car I can see Bisons point with tires as skinny as you would have on 3.5" wide wheels you would be making gains from less rolling resistance from the narrower tread with less contact

as far as if its worth it to swap for the street thats personal taste I do like the looks of the GN wheels myself , but for the track the old addage remove the ounces and the pounds will follow applies- wheels are damn easy to change out just for the track compared to most other methods of weight reduction and just as easy to undo:biggrin:

Everyone of us got there a Tenth at a time .So to me worth it!

i got exactly 1 tenth and 1mph for 100lbs on a mid 11sec gn.runs were back to back same day.those stock gn wheels weigh a ton compared to a set of prostars.my car also picked up mph on a set of skinnies on a narrower prostar vs a regular radial on a 15x8 prostar same rear tires.
