A few days ago my serpentine belt split at the frontmost rib, and it whipped around a few times before I could shut off the engine.

Since the front rib was swinging around so fast, it gouged an area on the hood insulation pad (above the alternator pulley). Sucks because the hood pad was basically brand new (3000 miles on it).

Has anyone repaired a hood pad with some damage? It looks like I might be able to fill it with fiberglass and adhesive - the key would be re-creating the black layer to hide the damage. Any ideas?

I'd cover up the damage with a nice shiny piece of very thin stainless steel, and glue it using contact cement. Anyone asks, just call it a "heat shield".

I've not pulled one off, is the backside the same finish? Steal a thin patch from the back to patch the front?

Wonder if that would work with the infamous up pipe rubbing...

I'll probably go junkyard crawling and see if I can find a donor. Thanks for the ideas - once I get it fixed I'll take some before & after pictures to document what (not) to do.
