On no F-body(82-92 for sure) should you have to pull the spring to get ot the engine mounts with any engine combo. If you take the time to look and get a 15mm or 9/6 flex socket you can reach inside the spring perch on the frame and get almost direct access to the nuts that everyone thinks are impossible to get.
(only going to apply to you for poly mounts)
it only took me about 15 minutes to pull both springs,made it very simple to get to the nuts,i was switching from v-8 mounts to the v-6 mounts so i had to replace the complete mounts..just seemed to make it alot easier for me

i get frustrated easily so removing things in my way help me do things more calmly...im sure with a little patience(i dont posses any)you could do it just fine with the spring in
