I was wondering how much, on average, it would cost to build a 7 or 8 second TR if you had to pay for all of the work and did nothing yourself. A breakdown would be nice. Like how much would the typical motor cost in one of these things?

I don't plan on getting one done myself (I wish, but probably couldn't handle it!!!).

How much do the big boys have in their cars?

I would guess and its only a guess cause god knows I'll never have one but I would say $40-50,000.

Maybe some 7 and 8 second guys can chime in, my 50k might be light.

I think $50K might be on the cheaper side. An SSO Mustang, which should be a 7 or 8 second car, costs a least a $80K to be done right, from what I've read in some of the NMRA literature.

A TR that could compete, and be safe and legal, would that should be somewhere up there too I think. If it had all of the suspension, body, and safety equipment too.

This is what I had into my car that I sold when I got married.

Back Half $10,000
Duttweiler Stage 2 $25,000
Turbo 400 with 8 inch $ 3000
Fast $3000
Weldon pump $500

This is over $40,000

I still needed
Center Section $1500
Brakes $1000
Rims and Tires $ 1500
Intercooler $3000
Fiber Glass $2000
Paint $4000
Wing and Chute $1000
Plumbing $1000
Misc $5000
Turbos $4000

This is another $24,000

I would have had about $65 to $70k to finish it.

If I had to do it again I would have about $20,000 for a 25.1 roller and about 8K for a lenco drive tranny. If I went with a clutch add about another 7k.

The car I was trying to build should have been good for 7.8s

Building a car like that is only part of the cost, KEEPING it running would still cost a small fortune.

You are right !!!!

Try $35,000 for a ok tow vehicle and about $10,000 for a good trailer:eek:

My mind had dreams that my checking account could not fill :(

Good to see I was close........lol........I cant even guess right thats why I'll never own one......lol.

How much would it cost to build a 7 Second Buick TR

The two replys above me are getting close to the cost, but if you are going to build one of these cars From was I have been told you will probably put out close to 80K to 100K for a twin Turbo engine putting out 1500 HP + and lasting for 70+ runs and a full chassis car.

Hope this answers your question Steve Hurst-President BGNRA visit our club web site at http://www.bgnra.org[/URL]

Well...

....I consulted Mr.Hartline with this same question one day. His answer for a car similar to his was about 30k for the motor and drivetrain(trans., fuel management, turbo) With all the other little things probably another 10k, so the grand total is about 40k, assuming you already have the car itself. :)

Not to sound like a non buick faithful, but you can build a serious v-8 for probably half the price..:o

i am attemptingto build a car taht might get into the 7's with on of them 8 cyl things, but chassis wise its the same, and your talking an easy 30k, backhalf, 14pt cage, 9 inch, brakes, wheels, tires, tin work, rack and pinion, front control arms, removable crossmember, and all the fiberglass. the engine is cheaper in my case, but the turbos, headers, fuel managment, all cost the same, its an easy 60k no matter what way you go, i don't have a pristine tow rig, but it does get me around the countyr, a shortbed 92 f-150 with a tow package and a 20' enclosed cost my 11k total, so you can get away taht way cheaply, but you will ahve to do alot of your work outdoors, but thats ok.

Alex,

I would like a car very similar to Cal's.
I just need to finish the motor.
The rest is purchased or left over from my
stock block and back half projects.

I need the following.
Crank $1500 - $2000
Rods $750
Balancer and flywheel $750
Convert Intake $500
Headers $1500
Plumbing $1000
Misc $2000

Sounds like I will still need about $10,000

just so you guys can see the difference in price, for a v-8 that is

block machining/balancing 900
Crank, 4340 non-twist fordged, nitrited and lightned 325
rods, h-beam 4340 bronze bushed 300
pistons, JE blower/turbo 600
oil pan and pump, dragster style fabricated aluminum 300
roller cam, with titianium retainers and springs 225
roller lifters 150
heads, flow 318 intake, 205 exhaust, severe duty valves 1300
bowtie intake converted to fuel injection 200
fluidamper 150
head/main studs 200
rings, gapless 200
granted alot of these parts are bought off of ebay, but most buick stuff is used too, and besides the oil pan all of this stuff is new, so total price for a long block cost me 4850

Scott would know :D
Just when you think you are done
little $2000 and $5000 things come up!

Take Billy Anderson's car. I would call that a $100k car easy. It IS a race car in every sense of the word. Extremely well done, and no expense spared.

umm... yea... Like I said... 100K. easy...

and if you build a manual car you will be in deeper to the tune of about 20-25K.

I can sell you (or anyone) one for much cheaper...

John, I am so close I can taste it. If I had these TT headers sold and a set of singles, I could be done in a month taking my time. I just have to hook up the wires, notch the frame, weld the seat in, weld the wolfe bar in and all the rest is piddely. Jack is going to do the welding but I want to do all I can here 1st before it goes up there. I want him to set it up and turn the key, play with the felpro, etc. I just can't beleive in the last 3 months, no one has needed a set of brand new TT headers. I have a PT-88 sitting here waiting to be mounted and then i can snap some pics for my web page. I have all the $1k + items off my list, all bought and paid for. I deffinately don't wanna rush it, ive taken my time so far and racing in August isn't something to rush to.. Racing in Sept, is another story though.:D

John, hows your car coming?? I see you sold one of them. That should mean that just concentrating on one car you should almost be ready too..;)

Scott,

I am glad that things are getting close.
I will have to shoot you an email tonight.
My race car is sitting, my wife is sick and out
of work. Not much time or money for the buick right now.
