Just got it cut out and without it I've noticed a huge difference in spool time, and the sound of the turbo through the exhaust is simply beautiful. I should have done it sooner. Glad I don't need emissions testing.

How did it change the exhaust note? I have been thinking about a new down pipe along with test pipe. I really like how quiet the car is right now. You dont happen to have factory manifolds on there do ya? I would love to hear it. Have been searching videos on youtube but haven't found a good cat free one.

exhaust not is pretty similar, just gets out shouted by the turbo more often now. also a tiny bit louder. I do have stock a stock manifold and headers. I'll get a video for you this weekend. my friends wont have any issues shooting that. 2.5 inch exhaust however.

If you want to really have fun, put a dump pipe and an electric cut out.

catalytic

Is there any HP to gain with the removal of the convertor? I just purchased a mild mod 87 t-type. The car has an upgraded exaust with a 4 bolt catalytic convertor just after the dump pipe. No emission testing in Michigan. I am wondering if this is holding back some HP. also looking at adding Alky injection. Most likely this is a no no with a convertor?

Guys,
You can make insane power with a cat! Cotton installed a single 3.5" SS system with Magnaflow muffler and a great cat. It still has way more power than the chassis can handle. Check out my sig below for details. Only problem...it is LOUD! Working on that. But power is NO PROBLEM! YOu really can have both.

I also removed my cat, just ran around with an open DP for a week or two. The performance is noticeable, I've got the kirbans 3in high flow cat. It's clean and clear, and I still noticed a considerable difference.

but if you don't need it, then at the very least you are getting rid of some weight off the car by ditching the cat.

A few weeks ago I installed a few things on my 87 GN. Installed a Pypes 2.5" SS exhaust and SS mufflers (you can look staight through them), cat back, TurboTweak chip 93 oct for a stock turbo and Big Mouth Cold Air Intake. At the same time I replaced the cat with a test pipe. It sounded good and the car ran great, smother engine and better performance. I was amazed how muffled it was. You hear it but it was not near over the top. Since then I replaced the original downpipe with a 3.5" SS DP with cut out. Wow! Does the car go. It has a louder purrrrrr now and the turbo is more audible. My high range hearing is shot but I took my wife out on the test run and she was impressed too. She approved of the mods and did not find the car too loud.
Next is, remove the cut out cover to see the difference.
