Maybe some of you can clear this up for me please?

I just sold an item on eBay, and the auction ended today, about an hour ago.

The winning bidder has yet to send his Paypal, as he is waiting on my reponse....but right after the auction ended, he sent this message:

hi
I need to get this item by Feb. 6th so would it be possible for
me to give you my fedx account number and for you to send it
out monday via fedx 2nd day service/
thanks

Why would someone give me their Fed ex account number? Is it to pay for the prompt shipping? How does this work?

Or should I be suspicious?

Also i just checked this guy's f/b and it's 100% and he's been a member for 10 years now.

I have had a couple people send stuff on my account #.
Not really a big deal if I trust them.

But a least get paid first.

FedEx

Personally, I would not give out any account numbers for anything.I believe you can send FedEx stuff, and under payment, mark "Bill Recipient" I think it is called. Maybe by giving you his account number is faster... but in today's times, I would hesitate in providing ANY kind of account numbers. Call me paranoid...

tony, i've sold a good bit on evilbay. it shouldn't be a problem, but x2 get paid before you ever ship anything. for me it would be a hassle, just because i'm set in my shipping ways of just running to ups store. also, i wish people would tell me things like this, or that they can't pay for 2 weeks before they ever place the bid.... on second thought, i'm always suspisious of anyone wanting it fast. you could always tell him you'll ship quick and send an invoice for the extra shipping. if this is a high dollar item, this should be a red flag, if it's not, then it's probably cool.

No it's not a high dollar item. It's a stock Delco radio. Guy paid me $30 for it.

Only thing I could think of is if he gave me his Fed Ex account number, then if I took it to a Fed Ex shipper and gave it to them to ship with his account number, they maybe they would charge the extra to ship it 2 day service to him instead of me?

Does that sound right? Can they do that? Do they do that for those who ship on a regular basis with Fed Ex?

I'm definitely going to tell him I'm not doing anything until I get the full price the radio sold for, to include the pre set shipping charge I had listed on the auction site. Unless there's a different route I should take.

By him giving you his account number, he will be the one getting billed for shipping costs. Just hope it's his account. :D

I got another email from him after I asked how this all works/what he planned to do:

I will pay for the item with paypal tomorrow morning
and then all you have to do is pack it and take it to a fedx place and
put my fedx account number on the packing slip and they charge
me for the shipping to my fedx account

Hhhmm....sound legit????

like he said... i've heard of people doing this, probably no big deal, just keep a copy of his address around (just in case). call and ask the fedex ppl about it at the store.

I read a thread on here regarding this very issue, but I think it was ups? The seller was shipping something (engine block? or something expensive to ship) to Puerto Rico on the buyer's ups/fedex acct., and ended up getting his credit rating screwed over when the shipping company went after him (the shipper) for the bill ($hundreds$) because the guy (buyer) never paid his account.... or something to that effect..... bottom line.... if something screws up, it's the SHIPPER that is responsible for the bill..... no matter what.... not saying your situation isn't legit.... just that in the eventuallity that the guy is giving you a shipping acct. number that he stole/obtained somehow/doesn't pay/whatever, YOU will be responsible for squaring up the bill.... you might do a search on here for fedex, ups, etc if you are really worried.... although the shipping cost of a radio may not be a cause for you to be paranoid.... just a fyi.... :)

edit - found it... here it is: http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/parts-sale/263034-sellers-beware.html

Damn that's scary.

According to the eBay invoice, it says this buyer lives in Rancho Mirage, CA 92270.

I sure hope if this guy didn't pay up they wouldn't try to nab me for anything on his tab that's NOT been paid. I.E. if he's racked up 6 months of shipping from other items....I would hope if they were going to come after me it would be to only collect on what I shipped to him, not what everyone else had shipped to him.

I usually ship my parts parcel post unless they're too big that I'd need to use UPS or Fed Ex.

Not sure if I should take this gamble or just ship it to him parcel post and risk him leaving me a neg f/b.

He says he needs it by Feb 6....it's the same size radio our TR's use....maybe I can Priority Mail it to him instead? I think they could have it there in a few days....

brian's idea of being being backcharged makes sense to me. tell us what you end up doing and how it works out.

Saw this VERY thing happen on another board!
Seller used UPS acct #. Pkge shipped, buyer got it, then denied the frt charges on HIS acct.
UPS came after the seller!!
READ the small print! I'll bet it states shipper is RESPONSIBLE, if the acct holder denies the charge!
Easy way to avoid this: Have the buyer include the shipping cost in the Paypal...Done deal. He gets his stuff, and you don't get hosed...
IMO, if he can't afford the frt, he can't afford the radio..
