Got a trans on my bench that I can't get the forward drum out of for some reason. Something broke, don't know exactly what yet. The drum spins and the sun gear seems to be working fine but the forward drum will not come off the front internal gear. Trying to figure out a way to put a puller on it but don't want to damage the case, etc.

Anyone got a trick to get the forward drum out?? I'm puzzled..

200 4R? If so,it may sound violent, but I havehad to flip the case upside down and hit hte bell housing on the ground. The forward clutches are pretty much welded to the ring gear.

Yes, it's a 2004r. I don't think dropping the case on the concrete will work. It seems to spin fine but just won't let go and slide out..

Grab the drum with some vise grips and wiggle and pull or do the above mentioned case on the concrete.
You may have a friction past the splines on the ring gear or they may be welded.

I'm thinking it is a friction past the spline but I figured with pulling on it with vise grips it would just pop out... that isn't the case here.

going to setup a puller and some flat bar, somethings coming out then..

Remove the servo pin and center support bolts and snap ring then bang it out as Otto suggested. The direct drum, forward drum, center support and all should come out all at once.

That's the issue.. the center support and direct drum are out... Forward will not come out. Been building these for over 12 yrs never had this issue before.

Last time that happen to me I had to bust the case. You can try a long punch in the center of the forward drum shaft. Try to drive the output shaft out the back and if your lucky the snap ring will break off. Did this once years ago. If its a stock drum this will work great if its billet be careful you dont kill the drum.

Try hitting the end of the forward drum like quick t suggested.

Not knowing if clutches are burned & welded together(would have lots of material in pan) I have had a few that the plastic "Button" washer(is in between forward drum and output shaft) broke up allowing the forward clutches to catch the backside of splined ring gear, get a pair of Large HD Vise Grips and lock onto forward clutch splined area, pull drum while spouting swear words (you may create a few new ones) but she'll come out.
I don't want to disagree with QuickT, but forward drum shaft is not hollow and driving a punch through the center will not contact output shaft. Good Luck.

Kevin.

No metal or material in pan...

He doesn't mean drive the punch through the forward drum. He means driving the forward drum up against the output shaft and try a force the snap ring off the output shaft. I had the frictions on one trans go beyond the spline that caused this problem (plastic button wore down). You have to be very patient and hold the trans vertical (bell housing down) then rotate and "jiggle" the forward drum at the same time. If you get lucky it will come off. It took me about an hour to get one off one time but it did go. :)

You are correct thats what I was talking about. You can do it but you will need to beat the crap out of it.

Ok, I understand what QuickT was referring to now, I think we've all been in the position of "What choice do I have Left?" some times your left with no other choice but to break it some more in order to proceed to the "Repair" stage, Maybe that's the reason it can be called "TEAR DOWN"

jason----same thing happened to me a couple years ago------i didnt want to damage anything with vise grips etc so i machined a special rotary clamp that allows the use of a puller to grab the forward drum without damage------if you are still stuck give me a call and i'll loan it to you------336-229-5554 or 336-570-0341.........RC

You never cease to amaze me with what you come up with, Richard...
