I want to know what kind of maf to swap out from stock, 2 bar, 3 bar? My co worker was explaining that I could pretty much use any type of a later gm firebird, truck, etc. Is this true? Or is there any do's and donts as far as this goes, Thanks
 
MAF or MAP? MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor, MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. The MAF measure air flow in grams of air, the MAP measures vacuum/boost. If you were to get an alky kit from Razor, he includes a 3 bar map sensor with most of the kits. The stock MAF works great, but if it goes bad, a reman from someplace like Autozone, Oreillys, Pep-Boys is JUNK! You have to get a translator to run a newer style MAF (like from a firebird, corvette, impala, etc..)

i bought a reman from pepboys what am i expect from it? should i go to a junk yard and try and get it from an impala or firebird and hat years does it matter as long as it later than 86 which my car is an 86 buick gn! thanks much

Won't work without a translator. Some people have had luck with store brand MAF's, most have not.

Get a 3.5" GM MAF and a translator....never look back.

I think what he is asking is Can any 3.5'' GM MAF work for our cars with a translator or does it have to be a LT1 or LS1?
 
O.P. it appears as though your thread is inadvertently hi jacked. Please clarify what you need. MAF or MAP.
 
MAP and MAF

Sorry I typed MAF but meant MAP but in the meantime how to determine a bad MAF (stock style) scanmaster readings are; idle 08, 60 mph 98, WOT 102 does this mean anything or just foot the money for a 3.5 mAF & translator? Car breaks up real bad at WOT replaced lots of parts already ECM, ign module, chip, adj fuel press reg, bigger injectors, all new filters, fuel pressure is good, grounds good, etc etc, I have been trying so hard to get this fixed whover has the majic wand send me paypal address (hA HA), Thanks if anyone knows somthing good.
 
102 at WOT!? There's something wrong. I'm fairly certain that even only 8# of boost would pull more air through the MAF than that.
 
I'm sorry, I haven't run the stock MAF in quite a while, but for reference my Translator+ & LT1 MAF, I'm seeing 102grams of air at only 5psi of boost, and it's maxxing the 255 (255 is all the stock ECM can "see") by 21psi.

How much boost are you trying to run? When MAFs go bad, they act real "funny", some won't run at all, some will run WOT, some won't idle, etc..

Is there anyone with a Turbo Buick near you that will let you borrow a stock type MAF?
 
No it seems in my part of town there might be me and 1 other guy (i dont know him) so cant swap MAF as far as how it runs it idles fine just startys breaking up real bad at WOT and my car set up is chip, 42lbs injs., exhaust w/test pipe, cold air kit and the rest stock so maybe 15-18 lbs of boost. If you look at post I have already changed a ton of parts
 
you MAF readings on the Scanmaster should rise pretty fast when accelerating, if you don't see 255 at WOT the car will buck and break up trying to get there.
I bought a reman, tried it and still only got 110, took it back, next one turned out ok. Check the af reading from time to time at WOT.
at idle I see 4-8 depending on outsite temps which is about the normal range for a good maf.
 
WHat boost levels are you running? before/after MAF upgrade?

did you set the translator right? if your getting 15psi and higher, your map sensor needs to be a 3 bar. Stock is 2bar 15lbs max reading.
 
No not a MAF upgrade or translater just stock MAF but it looks like if I cant get a stock MAF I will have to upgrade later just want to get car running good no race car yet, but by the time I fix it it will be (ha ha)
