Since they're mild steel, have you made up your mind how you'll protect them yet?

TA Headers

I bought a set just like these. They bolted on perfect and I have had no problems since I installed them. If you keep wiping them with a oily rag they will get a nice burnt coating on them to keep them from rusting. FYI. Boat racers do that to there headers.;) Good Luck.

or you can start a fire... that happens to boat racers also  they are closer to water though
seen it happen.

by the time you jet hot coat them you are almost at stainless price. sheeeesh... :o

Im going to use VHT Flameproof coating on mine. Supposed to be real good stuff.

Very High Temp 350F - 2000F Very High Temp 350F - 2000F VHT FlameProof Coatings VHT FlameProof Coatings Flat Black - VHT Paint

Nick Micale and Brian at G Body parts both spoke highly of the stuff. Said the key is in the prep and following the instructions.
O Rielys had it on teh shelf in several colors. Though I will be going with black to hide staining.

I was supposed to have mine last week!!!!!!!!
DHL lost my TA Headers that I ordered from Nick and then when I finally got them they were damaged (the box was beat to death and the headers were dented and gouged up) and I was not happy!!

The new set should be here this week.

If you wipe the cold headers with an oily rag, NOT dripping with oil, it will "cook in" very quickly after start-up, and there will be NO danger of any fire.

When preping for VHT paint, I wash the headers with dish soap and dry with a propane torch to take out ALL the moisture before painting. The VHT holds up for a long time when done like this.

Cold headers are fine, and you are correct a thin layer.
You can actuly quinch metal in a oil bath with no fire, this is done in blacksmithing when doing some projects when water would be no good. When its red hot though... not so advisable.

Its called "quenching", and the oil does catch fire. Theres many many different methods of hardening and tempering, and oil quenching only works on certain steels. You water quench, and it draws heat out too quick and cracks the metal. Air quenching is too un-uniform and creates problems unless you're hardening and tempering air hardening steels in a vacuum environment. Theres a method to oil quenching, and if you dont do it perfect, the bucket of oil WILL catch on fire. Very very scary. Been there done that.
Just get that ceramic based black exhaust paint from auto parts stores. It says like "1750 degrees" or whatever...shows the temps its made o handle. Ive used that on every exhaust component for the past 10 years, and if you prep the metal really well, and leave no oil residue whatsoever, it will bond and never come off. Plus it'll never discolor. Black paint is the best color for thermal dissipation.

ah, another blacksmith here :) yes... the oil fires are no fun. I live next to a church... and they dislike them more then me. I make sure i do it on sundays

VHT Paint has arrived

Hey guys, VHT paint just arrived, SP118 primer, SP102 black, and SP115 clear, im gonna spray em today and install em tommorow! Everything else is done and ready to go, should be driving sunday!!

I just got off the phone with VHT, had a few questions on prep and temp and found out that the Black will withstand closer to 2000 degrees due to the lack of pigments.

They told me NASA uses VHT black to paint the numbers and letters on the Space Shuttle tiles because it withstands reentry temps...WOW!!

Did they say it should be primed or just to spary it? I have neve used a high temp primer before!?!?

VHT recommendation

The primer was the main reason I called, VHT said that the primer was not really neccesary and the lady (real cool and knew her stuff) was straight up and said.
Hey... we are in the paint business and really recommended the primer to make people buy more paint for the job.
Bottom line...is it really needed...no.
The primer really comes into play with used sets of headers that are pitted and have been run through the paces, etc.
She said as long as the metal is super clean and down to bare metal free of crap(dirt, old paint, etc) then just the paint will fine w/o the primer.

Being that we are painting them in new never used cond, no primer is fine.
Several Light coats is the way to do it, the paint has ceramic chips and the light coats give them a chance to spread out.
She recommended 2-3 coats.
As far as the clear she said it would not last that long as it is only good for around 1000 degrees and more for show cars that get few miles.
The lady was straight up with me on everything.

I also asked about the on the car curing process. She said just follow the guidelines and all is well. Only thing with the on the car, is just be careful hitting them and spilling chemicals on them during install as the paint is not in a cured state yet.

I sprayed my headers with VHT about 3 years ago and it's still on there. I hung the headers from a piece of wire then torched them really hot. Sprayed the paint on there while still too hot to touch. I've always done headers like that.
