OK guys, I travel a lot for business and sometimes my new HP laptop (VISTA:mad: ) will connect to wireless and then the very next night it will not connect using an ether net cable.

I have called HP support, I have called the motels ISP provider etc and no help.

It shows I am sending "packets" but sometimes it will not recieve "packets".

I have shut off all firewalls etc...............

Any ideas? I had 1 of the motels reset their router and then it worked great.

TIA

Ty

Is Vista SP1 installed? It should be...

Can you connect to other wireless networks? How busy is the hotel or the area around it? Any encryption? Did you try another CAT5 cable? Crossover cable?

When you can't connect.

Perform cmd -ENTER-

At the dos looking box,
ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt -ENTER-

Post the contents of ipconfig.txt here.

I doubt it's anything with your computer. Did tech support have you install the latest drivers?

You got me bud........................ but we did get into the command/ prompt stuff with the HP tech guys.

Just frustrating............ Sold my ACER which I never had a problem with and know the HP:mad:

Thanks for replying!

No, seriously. Post the info when it breaks.

Many *free* wireless networks are having a hard time staying online with the new iphones that are out. The phone is configured to connect to any available wireless network. Say your hotel has a wireless router that has a DHCP address scope with 150 addresses with a lease time of 1 day. That would mean that for any given day, you can't have any more than 150 unique network interface cards on this network. That's not too big a problem until the iphone came out... Say 40 iphones are in range at any point within a 24 hour period to get an address, that drops your available IPs to 110 that may just be enough to prohibit new machines. This is no way a slam against the iphone, it's just something most net-admins don't plan for. That may be why things worked after the router was rebooted (clears used addresses that haven't reported in). The other thing is there may be port security on that prevents the same machine from getting two ip addresses.

Post the information please. Something is seriously wrong with the network or a configuration if you can't get on using a cable to a public type connection.

1st off you got Vista:tongue: I told you to get XP:biggrin:

Windows did just release SP1 for it I understand, make sure you got it....

Try the wireless connection, may not be as fast but should work better...

Ty:
Hopefully, your mention of HP stood for HorsePower and not Hewlett-Packard.
Just busting chops, Ty, hope that everything comes out ok. IMac for me, I think.

Vista

IS THE PROBLEM. I do IT support for a living. No doubt in my mind VISTA is the issue. You just have to hope and pray that another driver or a service pack released by Microsoft solves the problem. One of my clients had to buy a new laptop for his salesperson b/c of the same issue. I checked, there was no driver update, and nothing on Microsoft about the issue. IT was the SAME exact problem, sometime networks it worked, others it did not.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Ok this may sound stupid cause I did it.. I have a work laptop that I brought home & tried to connect to wireless but there was a switch on the body that turned on/off wireless. Mine is an IBM Thinkpad. Not sure if HP has such a feature?
