One of my customers is in trouble & needs a power master new preferred or a good power motor to fix his. Up till now he's been supplying his own parts with rebuilt & gotten two bad ones in a row. So I did a conversion & that sucked the brakes just don't feel correct, I suspect that these engines just can't supply enough vacuum to keep the booster happy, I don't like to take a chance with brakes. have always been able to service the original ,Now the parts are getting scarce.Maybe it's time to start working on Subaru's, I hate hunting for parts, Anyone got any better ideas let me know. Thanks Lou

Might want to talk to Andrew first, as I believe that he had his powermaster unit, or a powermaster unit rebuilt by these people:
ABS Power Brake Inc.

Orange, Ca.

Gary the biggest problem is the pump motor which is sealed & there's no way to rebuild. Since I work on these cars so much I have had a lot of experience with these so called rebuilt units. It's more like an aerosol overhaul.

I don't doubt that, Lou, I only mentioned that because Andrew advised me that he was happy with his. Not to be a heartbreaker, but the last honest "New in the box" NOS that I am aware of, or at least one of the last ones is nice and comfty in it's original box in my gun safe, and it's staying there. Dennis Kirban's last one, bought about 2 years ago. Cost me 1 arm, 1 leg, & 1 other body part that I am not mentioning by name. I know that this info does not help anybody, but it sure made me feel good about things.

I know of a good used, 24K mile unit. Let me see if he's willing to part with it.

Car doesn't go fast enough to need to stop, does it?

Up till now I have not had a problem getting but I can see that I have to get serious about finding sources. To keep my customers happy & on the road.

my vacuum brakes feel good.Of course I haven't tried to hold boost.
As I said the customer keeps providing his own parts & I'm eating it over this trying to help the guy. He's getting the parts from a reliable source with good intentions But that isn't helping me much.

That's ok, Phil, mine doesn't go fast enough to need stopping either, but Lou is going to fix that soon enough. I am planning on going to discs on all 4 corners & SS brake lines. Probably won't stop any better but it will look kool & drain a serious hole in my pocketbook.

Lou,
I have been working on Armen's car and he has bought the hydroboost kit from a brake company in Long Beach. I think the cost is about $500 with your own master cylinder (they charge $800 for the complete kit). If you do a search you can get the link to the vendor supplying the kits (suppose to be a bolt in set up for the GN's)

Thanks Jeff that's certainly an option but a bit extreme, I just want to get a good functioning powermaster & call it a day.

good morning Lou

I'm using the vacumn setup on the hotrod, with no problems at all!
it runs a 214 roller, plenty of vac, and has good brakes when boosting for launch, ,
just make sure you get the dual diaphram booster,
just my 2 cents

Dual Diaphragm booster? What I have is a coplete kit from kirbans which I assume would be correct? The car behaves like I have a booster problem. Brakes feel grabby & at one point the fronts were sticking & wouldn't release. In other words on top of the two bad power masters I received in a row I now either have a wrong or bad vacuum unit from them also. Why am I pissed & why am I allowing the customer to supply their own parts.I make no profit on parts & now I stuck with making the customers s#it right. This is why smart garage owners refuse to get involved with dumb ass customers that try to save a buck on the back of the mechanic. Fawk This! i'm taking up needle point, bingo or shuffle board like the rest of the seniors.

My BS meter is off the scale !

needle point, bingo, shuffleboard. yea. sure!
check the rod between the master and booster, MUST be some clearance,
or brake will not release, you have a known good check valve ??
let me know if I can help
thanks

I think my power master is on its way out. The pump wont shut off and the brake light on the dash turns on sometimes, but then goes off. I know if the pump keeps running like that it will die so till i figure out the problem the car is going to stay dormant.....
