I was out running my TR today and made about 9 passes before something very odd happened. On the next pass the car was late shifting and hitting the rev limiter in the lower gears....never did this before and the tranny is nearly new. It did not matter how hard I was on the gas, it feels like the TV adjustment is all the way in against the firewall. The car shifts so hard and late it nearly knocked the fillings out of my teeth. This was taking place anywhere from slow cruising in town to out on the highway. I checked the TV cable and it moves back and forth with tension like the spring is still hooked up. I tried a launch off of the T brake and that worked fine....appears to be either the 1-2 or 2-3 shifts....if I had to guess just one I'd say it was the 1-2 change. Any chance the TV piston is jammed inside the VB...it feels like the tranny is making max pressure in all gears???

Update

I pulled my direct scan files tonight and it looks as though the motor was hitting the rev limiter/fuel cut-off right at 6375 rpm at 43-48 mph...this is the 1-2 shift I'd guess.

Although the rest of the shifts were crazy hard it doesn't appear that the 2-3 or 3-4 shifts were hitting the limiter. If I went to WOT and backed off the gas before it hit the limiter on the 1-2 it would shift into 2nd and continue pulling.

Do you think it's possible that the TV piston is jammed into the valve body causign such high line pressure and late shifts?

How about something in the govenor messing up? If a govenor weight or that flip'n spring flew off, would it cause such symptoms?

What really sucks is I just got the car dialed in with the new turbo and meth injection and it was running REAL hard right before this crap happened...it's always something isn't it:mad:

Anyhow I need ideas and places to start looking fellas!

6,375 rpm on an unmodified motor seems real high to me.

Sorry, but I can't answer your questions.

It sounds like a stuck or sticking TV valve in the VB. I would not rule out a missing spring in the governor, but that wouldn't explain the bang shifts, with the late shifts. Pull the pan and check for abnormal debris first. If that looks OK, pull the governor and make sure the one spring is behind the light weight. If that's OK, pull the VB and check for a sticking TV valve. If you find a sticking TV valve, the only question left is, 'why did it stick'? Normally, excessive debris in the fluid causes the TV valve to stick, which makes your first assessment of what you found in the pan even more important. Good luck.

If Its Making Max Tv All The Time Itll Slam Into Rev And Drive From Neutral Or Park As Well As Knock When Backshifting While Slowing Down.if Not Sounds Like The Gov Spring Fell Out Of The Governor.does Pulling The Tv Cable Out By Hand In Drive Result In An Rpm Drop Of About 100 Or So Rpms And Make An Audible Noise Out Of The Filler Tube?if So Tv Is Probably Working

I would like to think that since the tranny is about new as it comes, debris is not an issue but it isn't being ruled out either. Is there some kind of a stronger spring that I can put behind the TV piston to ensure that this doesn't happen again if it is indeed the piston causing this problem?
After thinking about this some more I remember my pop's GN having a similiar problem and it was the gov spring....we found it in the pan if I remember correctly. We put a set screw through the spring and havn't had a problem since.
I really hate dropping the VB and messing with those ball bearings and making sure everything is lined up perfectly...PITA and it seems like I never get it to seal correctly. Is there a pattern I should be using when torquing the VB?

It doesn't slam going into gear or knock when back shifting. I'll check to see if the rpm drops and the filler tube makes a nosie when I pull the TV cable out by hand...thanks!

I ran home and did what you mentioned above. Best I can tell the rpm of the engine is dropping but not very much. However, there is a very obvious sound coming out of the filler tube when I pull the cable out....kinda sounds like a higher pitch growl like a pump spinning. So what your saying then is, this is a good indication that the TV is working correctly and prolly not jammed?

Ok, thanks! I'm going to drop the pan this weekend and see what I find with the govenor...I appreciate yours and everyone elses input.

I wasn't real happy about that kind fo rpm either, but it happened and the motor is still together and sounds great...keeping my fingers crossed.
As a side note, I highly doubt that 1 time to 6375 rpm is going to kill anything unless there was a bunch of detonation there as well...not the case here.

I just dropped the pan and found the govenor spring in bottom of the fluid and it's all f'ed up! I need to know where I can get another spring or a spring kit to tune the govenor for a specific rpm shift:confused: If anyone has an original turbo regal spring they will part with, please let me know what you need for it and shipping and send it to:

Joe,
I have one. I will send it to you.
It will leave here tomorrow a.m.
That is when I will be shipping a couple other things as well.
Brian

Ok, thanks a ton!

Glad I could help.

The springs are on the way. One is an original blue BRF spring. The other is another (vendors) spring. Either will do the job well.
Never hurts to have an extra!
