Please see sig. for current mods. Stock unopened longblock with 53,000 miles.

Here are my goals:

1. Maintain daily drivability
2. Upgrade to 50lb injectors
3. Keep stock intercooler (for now), may consider an upgraded stock location in the future
4. Keep stock downpipe for now
5. Only run 93 octane and alky
6. I am willing to get a higher stall lockup converter
7. Keep the price of mods down

My car runs very strong with the stock turbo, and I am afraid that I won’t see much change going to a TA49, TE44, or GT3255.

Would going to a larger turbo, such as a 61, and running it at the boost levels afforded by the alky (20-22) be worth the extra lag? This being a street car, I am primarily concerned with the 5-90 mph acceleration.

Please give me your opinions on the turbos that I have listed or any others that you may recommend.

Thanks,

Mark

Agreed-

if you want to maintain streetablility- then maximize your current combo.

why spend the loot for a turbo, injectors, and torque convertor just to blow the tires away and have to upgrade to a much larger tire just to somewhat hook on the street?

im not talking you out of buying those parts, but why not just purchase a THDP / ATR with the internal wastegate downpipe, RAZOR or SMC alky KIT, and a Eric marshall chip for your stock injectors.
the car will fly and you dont even have 900.00 into the combo.
save the extra money for a trans cooler, and a brake upgrade

Thanks for the advice guys. I was planning to change my injectors because I am running out of fuel, or they are clogged, and I am having to run higher fuel pressure.

I already have an SMC Alky kit that allows me to easily run 22 lbs on the stock combo.

I also have a set of 275/60 BFG Drag Radials that came with the car.

My current tires are 255/60 's on the rear.

I think that I may go with the downpipe. I was thinking of doing more so that I would not have to worry about any lightly modded LS1's.

if you are running out of fuel pressure on the stock turbo, with the stock injectors, what chip do you have?

just wondering because i have a similar combo

I like the 7 step plan you thought out. :)

1. No problemo drive the car, that's what it was made for.

2. 50's or what's on sale in the 50-60 Hi-Z range. Stockers suck. Turbotweak alky. chip for it.

3. Duttweiler neck stocker for about $175-200 or used stretch for a bit more. Pressure tested from a reputable seller. ;)

4. Keep the stock down pipe until you find a good buy on a used stainless pipe with a nice stock wastegate style swingarm.

5. Nothing wrong with 93 and alky., long drive to the track? When you get there drop a can of xylene in there for piece of mind with 5 gallons gas. ;)

6. Get a 3000 stall converter, IF and only IF you have to go inside the tranny for a rebuild otherwise save the $200 R+R for your downpipe or stock location intercooler. Not to mention the cost of the converter.

7. Start saving money, then you won't need a 7 step program. :D

61 turbo or so would be nice after you get a good 3000 stall LOCKUP converter. :)

I have too much torque to have any fun on the street. Even with the new micky thompson drag radials. I can only floor it, after rolling up to about 20mph++ (2nd gear). The drag strip has soooo much more "bite". I'm thinking a BIG turbo will slow down spool-up even more to be OK on the street, then building boost with my trans-brake will work for the strip. So I am selling my TE-61 and going bigger. Looking for 10s on a stock motor. As traction decreases with the winter coming on, this gets worse! More power, less traction.
