Off topic - Volvo fluid type question

My stepfather has a 1998 Volvo S90. I looked it up online and it appears to be equipped with an AW 50-42 LE transmission. The trans is 1/2 quart to 1 quart low. I read it may use synthetic fluid but could not find anything definitive. Is there anyone here in the trans business that can guide me to the type fluid to use? Thanks in advance.
