I have a 2004r tranny in my 66 skylark I would like better wot shifts and later 3-4 shifts my valve body is an og type, I know this isnt the best one for my app. but I learned about this later in the game. specs are hardened stator shaft, super servo, 10 vane pump with good rings, .500 boost valve, mild shift kit, 2200 stall , 3.90 posi. will a monte ss govenor help me tune this better if so any part numbers???????

You will need to swap out that OG for a BR, CZ or KZ. The AA works well also. Use the governor that came with the vb.

The Monte governor will likely cause VERY late WOT upshifts and also late part throttle.
I would follow bison's advice and get a different VB but the OG can be made to work, it just probably isn't worth the trouble.

Jim (77 cruiser) has made the OG work satisfactorily for him.

Chris has a bunch of VB's. I think he sells the decent VBs for $75 and the performance cores for ~$300.

I have a BRF valve body if you can't find anything else, but no matching governor ( I modify the stock govs anyway).

Good luck.

Resurrecting a really old thread.... just curious what you ended up doing. I have a 65 lark with a 455 OG 2004r trans

Steve, are you still using the og vb and og governor? If so pm 77 cruiser. He has the way. If you are into going another direction, hit the wrecking yard and see about the Cadillac section. Here you might be able to locate an AA as mentioned above. I am using the AA. You need the hard stator support, hard sun shell, .500 boost valve, larger rev boost valve, and 700r4 spring. Hard pump rings, a bearing for the planetary that has the plastic bushing, and a stiffer spring for the pump slide. Some vb mods(springs and holes) and possibly some gov lightening.
Plenty of stuff can be done to the og but it might be easier and cheaper to go with the swap. Your money/time, your call.

Thanks for the reply Rich. Yes my OG trans is still using the stock gov and VB. It was recently built by a local trans shop some of this stuff may have been done already. I was just wanting to perfect the shift points. I have a lead on a CZ gov and valve body. Hopefully swapping those out will get me close to the desired shift points. Should I do anything else when swapping the VB and GOV out?

what servo are you using? A 692 would be a minimum. 694 would be better, or a ckperformance one, and I like the sonnax aftermarket is the one I am using. It retains the spring unlike some of the other after market this results in a clunk on the 3-2 down shift.
I'm guessing you are using larger boost valves and 700 spring. Hard pump rings, and a stiffer slide spring.

If you are getting the mcss gov from Chris ask him about his servo.

I like the idea of buying a CZ VB from CK to pair up with the CZ governor I have to fix the shift points rather than trying to get the OG VB and OG governor to shift they way I want. Then I may as well get the CK shift re-calibration kit B that comes with the HD intermediate servo. Hopefully the instructions are really detailed, I'd like to tackle it my self :)

If you can stand a trans fluid bath or two and you have a few tools and a way to support your vehicle, I'm sure you will do fine.

I use a tub like this to catch and reuse the fluid, did I mention I'm cheap?

Lol thats funny I have a tub very similar to that to save and reuse my fluids. I also installed a drain plug in the pan when I was thinking about installing the CZ governor. Glad I found this site to help me decide that a CZ governor mixed with an OG VB was a bad idea :)

Something else you guys might try when reusing your fluid, because we do the same thing is use a paint strainer in the funnel to catch any debris that may get in fluid, because no matter how careful we are its amazing how much trash still falls into it.
