So, this weekend, this 1990 3800 Oldsmobile daily workhorse, suddenly develops a REAL BAD mechanical knock about a block from the house.
Sounds like a BIG impact wrench. Raised RPM, sound goes away.
Could not see anything hitting. (Hmmmmm)
Shut it down for the night.

Started it up the next day after it cooled down, no sound . . . Put the stethoscope on the belt tensioner, alternator, PS pump, AC, no sounds.
Shut it off. (Thinking it fixed itself  ;) )

This morning, start it up, no sound, put it in gear, "CLACK, CLACK, CLACK". Shut it off. Trans / motor oil is good, not burned and at level.

Anyone have any suggestions / advice?
(No, it does not qualify for "Cash For Clunkers", Gas Mileage is too good! ;) )

Flex plate/torque converter bolts?
Harmonic balancer cracked, loose bolts.
Broken motor mount laying metal on metal?
Listen with stethoscope WHEN it's noisey.
Internal engine knocks will usually always be there.
Good luck, hope it's an easy fix.

Thanks man!
Gives me a good place to start . . . . Thought about the bolts this morning, but would that not create contact/knock even in park?

To be honest, I was so tired yesterday from working on other things around the house, I was in denial. Did not really want to know . . . .

Check the balancer. The rubber lets go and the inner and outer part clank together. Grab the belt with the engine off and see if it moves forward and back.

X`s 2 on the balancer.
Don`t drive it to much, or you will have more issues.

DAAANG you guys are good!!
Balancer replaced. The hardest part was getting the bolt off, and straighteing out the teeth on outer brand of the new balancer from the Autozone Clowns.

Thanks fellas!!!

Help me out here fellas

When it rains it pours . . . . :(

So, suddenly, the trans appears to be acting up.
I was told by the GF that it does not seem to increase speed when on the throttle sometimes.
When you back out of the throttle it increases speed. (Sounds like it it slipping to me  )

Anyone know if these things have trans issues?
Pretty sure trans was serviced per the OEM intervals.

And of course you've already check the trans fluid level hot. Did the fluid look burnt? Might be worth it to drop the pan see what's in it. I guess also double throttle valve cable adjustment to be sure it's not set too soft. Good luck.

Yeah, actually, I did check the fluid level "Hot".
It looks clean, so, that is part of what has me wondering.
I'll verify the cables. THANKS!!

I am no trans expert but those cars also had a lot of trans problems. Usually requiring replacement. If it has over 100,000 miles it might be toast. If you don't get other good advice I would try changing the fluid or a flush.

just replaced my drivetrain in my olds delta 88.its a 90 as well.they all had tranny problems until they went full electric, then on the 3800 series 2 engines the intake was plastic and leakd!

Got over 205K on my 89 Olds 88 royale now with the original tranny and engine in it. The key is maintenance. I've only had to replace the timing chain as far as a major problem and that was not quite 2 years ago.

I agree. I sold my 92 Bonneville S/C last year with 230,000 on the clock with the original trans that was serviced every 20,ooo miles.

Finally getting worst

1990 Oldsmobile 98 Brougham
Newer module, crank sensor, has FP.
After running it for some time, there is no spark. The engine just dies in the middle of the freeway.
Wiggle the wire at the coil pack and it usually starts back up. This is so inconsistent, it is frustrating.

The insulation on the wires at the crank sensor and ignition module was shredding, so, we added some heat shrink tubing on it.
ECM appears fine (Injector pulse is present when it stalls) The spark is STRONG when it fires up. Was looking for the pigtail, but dealer said it is discontinued (??) Pigtail section includes plug for Module and crank sensor, which than plugs into the main harness.

The ignition module is not at all "goo-ee" (Spelling??), and appears solid.
The pins in the module also appear to be solid, no play at all and clean.
Anyone has advice, or a wiring harness they want to sell?

Sounds like you have an issue with the conection Jerryl. Do you have the tools to take the weatherpac plug apart? If you do you might want to see if the wire has some damage to the the end.

The wires are prone to break inside the insulation where the connectors are crimped on also. The insulation will look fine, but the wires will break inside it.
