Option from the factory for rust protection

I have a question about what I hope was an option in 87 on the Buick GN. Was there an option from the factory for rust protection, the bottom ¼ of my GN looks like it had undercoating from the lower bodyline down and then paint over that. Please tell me this was an option, and not a really bad paint job.

that was the rock guard... it was an option... dont know if it was factory or dealer add on but, YES it s'posed to be like that...:wink:

Not an option. Standard on every G-Body and factory applied. The coverage varied from model to model. The Regals had more of it than any model that I know of. For example where it almost comes up to the lower body line of a Regal it only comes about halfway up on a Cutlass. Monte Carlos only recieved it on the rear quarters.

I had it my T before I had it painted. It came half way up the doors. I thought it was an option but could be wrong. I'll have to recheck my window sticker.

thanks for clearing that up, Eric.... only reason i thought it was an option is b/c there is sooooo much difference between cars. i have seen cars with barely any and some that look like chunky peanut butter:tongue:

My GN has it since brand new. It's called "rock guard" or "gravel guard", or something like that. I don't know if it was an option or if all of them had it though...

Mine ain't guarding from no rocks, that's for sure. It's chipping off in places down to bare metal.

Mine was heavily caked on the rockers, that's all I could find though. Worked for the car, I put jacks under the rockers to lift the body up

My Regal has this on it also, it's been painted over however. Was there an option code on the RPO sticker?

Have it as well. Scared the hell out of me the first time I noticed it. Thought the whole lower half was rotting out. lol

I don't know if anybody else has removed that chip guard, but I did it on a Cutlass door in excellent shape, and the sheet metal is anything but laser straight underneath that coating. Just a thought.

My GN is now being reassembled after getting bodywork and paint. I had the rock guard reapplied a bit lower than the original was.

I was going to leave it off, But after all, It is going to be a driver.......

So when this gets reapplied, at what stage in body work/paint is it applied? Does it get a full clear coat treatment or just a mist? what is it called exactly? Where do we go to get it? Don't mean to be annoying, just wanna do it right when the time comes

In hind sight, I would have had that put back on mine when I had it repainted. It would have held up a lot better against the rubber and tar from the drag strip.

The stuff I'm familiar with is clear and applied over the color or clear coat with an undercoating gun. When I had my GN painted about 15 years ago the Body Shop just sprayed it on over the clear coat. We couldn't remember where the line was so all we did was mask it off with 1" tape with the top edge of the tape on the body line.

The literature says: Paint - Plastisol Protection

I think that's the rock guard polyvinylbutylate part.

The guy doing my paint said that the chip guard he's used are in black and clear colors. He applied mine in black over the primer/sealer and (obviously) under the black paint and clear coat. That way, If I get a chip in the paint, the chip guard will show as black underneath and mask the chip.

Turbofish, my doors have a light coating up to about one inch from the body line. I will get an exact measurement next time I go outside. Was this stuff applied along the whole bottom of the car? If it was, how far up the quarter panels and fenders was it? I can't tell if it was run a straight line across the car or if it varied in sections.
