Does anyone know where i can get an old postal truck or van. Im not looking for the little jeep but one of the ones with the sliding side doors or preferably the roll up rear door. Ive searched the net for hours but i cant even find out who makes them, what motors they have, and finally where the hell i can buy one! No luck on ebay no luck on craigslist or random govt auction sites. Im in the SF bay area.....

Too bad your soo far away I have one that needs some work but runs. $300. Even has the title. By the way when you start working on them they have a GM engine Chrysler trans and Ford front end parts. This is on the older ones. 1982.

I worked on some about 15 years ago. the ones i worked on were I'M pretty sure were AM GENERAL or grummond. they are a pain in the ass to get parts for. they used what ever was cheapest. check with the post office near you . because if you have a main office near you they will have some. or check with government auctions

You could probably have the one my postal carrier uses. All you'd have to do is roll him out of it. I think he lives in it. It's pretty bad when your mail smells like alcohol.

Most post offices at least in my area have long done away with the jeep and went with LLVs (long life vehicles) so the post office may noy be the best bet. Unless you are looking for something newer than we all think.

They use many diferent body companies and diferent chasis with diferent engines. Check with a truck salvage yard or look in the truck trader magazines. If you were in Ohio i could lead you to some. Alot of old Fedex trucks end up for sale on truck lots or salvage yards.

Sounds like you're talking about the LLV. I've been looking for one too with out any success. Hey, the post office doesn't exactly auction off these things like they did with the old Jeep looking things. Here is what I know. 1987 was the first year of the LLV. The contract was won by Grumman and used a modified S series Blazer chassis with a hodgepodge of parts from the parts bins. A GM 2.0 liter 4 cylinder with the Chevette THM180C and a 3.08 gear in the 7.5". Basically a RHD Blazer. In 91 the engine was replaced by the old stand by 2.5 four banger same trans and a 3.42 gear. 1993 was the last year Grumman used a GM engine. 94 they went with Ford. Same engine as the Escort I believe and not the Ranger. And I think they continued using the GM frame for a couple of years. I want make one into a DD/parts chaser using a hot air Buick. My body shop repairs a lot of these for the regional PO depot here in Orlando and there appears to be an elephant graveyard of sorts that they get parts from. I have never seen a LLV in private hands roaming the streets. Awhile back there was a show on the Discovery Channel about a guy who converted a LLV to electric motors and batteries. Almost broke some records IIRC. If I find out where or how to get one I'll post back here with the information.

You know you could have some fun with this. Same brakes as a G-body so the LS1 brake swap would be a bolt on. Use the late model disc brake 8.5 rear from a 98 and newer Blazer. Use any motor thats to your liking and you would have one bizzare street/strip car.

Edit: I ran across one of those AM General built Jeeps in the bone yard. I dont recall the year but what was neat was that it was powered by a 1.7 liter VW motor with a TorqueFlight tranny. I saw the VW part number on the cylinder head and it had a stamped steel valve cover with AM General stamped on it. I cant think what the small TF trans was. It look like those early 1.7 motors Mopar used in the 78-79 Horizon/Omni. If I had the time and money I would have drug it home. I was thinking it would make a neat swap into something with the RWD manifolds and such. Than common sense kicked in. Its probally on it way to China as scrap metal by now.
