I am sick of my intake getting grimey and nasty looking no matter how clean I keep it. So......

Will paint or powdercoat make a noticeable difference due to limiting heat transfer? On the same token, is it a good or bad idea to coat the intake with a thermal barrier?

i think if you use a real thermal coating for the inside runners and the outside apperance it would help with performance....the inside runners more than the outside tho.

I've seen some done with Jet Hot silver, they do seem to stay cleaner than the stock finish. I think for performance value the only area I would think about would be the underside of the intake, maybe stop a little heat transfer up from the bottom end.

You know I have a bad habbit of wasting $$$ though...

I just had my intake powder coated with a base/clear coat. Looks really nice. Spend some time and sand it down to smooth it out some and it will come out really nice. Will be easy to clean also.

i painted mine and clearcoated the hell out of it. It looks ok, but its begun to yellow a tad bit.

I had the same problem when I cleared mine.

I had my intake powdercoated, but it got discolored and nasty looking quick. I am not living in the same place so I can't take it back and make them redo it, and I would not want to. Now I am having a hard time deciding what to do.

If anyone has any pics of intakes Jet Hotted (or equivelant) I would like to see them.

HAHAHA

Sorry, but the best coating for an intake and valve covers is a can of high temp Aluminum spray paint. If you do it right it will last nearly forever and look great and never yellow (anyone ever seen clearcoat that was high temp??). Don't waste your money on powdercoating unless you have money coming out your anus, there isn't a power gain to be had there especially for the money.

They do have high temp clear, but how HIGH temp are we looking at for intakes?

Disco stu,

I don't know of anyone that puts high temp on a intake manifold. The only place it would help would be on the bottom side, and everyone I know would be afraid the coating would come off and get in the oil and motor.

I powdercoated my intake, fuel rail, brackets and some other things over a year and a half ago. It is about the best coating there is to keep clean. If yours went bad, I would say they just didn't do a good job in the first place. It probably wasn't stripped clean enough. And if you are going to coat it with anything else, no matter what it is you will have to get it stripped perfectly clean again. That won't be easy. It will probably take a good strong bead blaster. Good luck.

I did Jet Hot on 2 cars... has worked real well on one and has not been operational on the 2nd yet. Wish I had pics because it looks great.

If you really have time to waste, you can smooth out the mainfold and then do coat it. That look is unreal.... I did have a picture of one that someone did like that. I just didn't have the time and ambition to smooth it all out (it's a tough job).

Jack Cotton just powdercoated his in black, but that's on the pumpkin, so the it looks great with the orange body. He smoothed it out before coating, so it came out fantastic. But he'll have that intake off every year anyway, not like us daily drivers.

I had mine bead blasted...then light coat of hi-temp aluminum followed by very light dusting of hi-temp clear...did this on both my cars years ago and still looks new...the clear coat makes cleanup easy too...grease/oil...etc just wipes off...
