I'm in the process of shopping for some new tires and am wondering: has anyone has tried the 27" diameter QT pros as an alternative to the old standby 26" or 28" tires? Seems like they might be a good compromise.

Comments on 10.5" width v. 11.5" also appreciated.

I'm not looking to go faster than 11.00 in the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the input.

I bought the 27x10.5 QT pros and I really like them. They hook pretty good. I have them on on 15x8 weld draglites with 3 1/2 backspacing and they fit fine. I had some 28x9 goodyears and they slowed my car down 3mph in the 1/4 at 112mph. I switched to 26 inch tires and pick up the mph to 115 the next day:eek:. Don't asked me why I don't know. That's what I found on the size issue.

Are you running the QT pros on the strip only or street and strip? I'm looking for a DOT tire that hooks well and could be driven some on the street.

I have had 27/10.50 qtp's on mine and they worked better than the 28/12.50 et streets on it now.

they were barrowed tho..:(

they are my buddy's ...his stock motored stock torque convertered 3720# gn was running 1.60 60 fts on them with no tire spin with very lil burnout

once my et streets are wore out I will be back on hoosiers

I run the Hoosier Quick Time Pro 27x11.5x15 on 15x8 Drag Stars (Weld) 3 1/2 back spacing. They work great at the track and on the street. 11.12 E.T at 124 mph best time so far.

Any more experiences from people who switched from the 26 or 28 to the 27?

Thanks for all of the input-- I will be running the 15x8 Draglites so the comments on backspacing are also much appreciated.

Scott

BuickTR-- nice MPH!!

I had a set of 27x10.5 hoosier quick time pro's and didn't like them at all. The would not hook for crap. I sold them and bought some 28x10.5 m/t slicks and love the slicks. When I went to the bigger tire I did not have to shift into over drive in the 1/4 mile.

Just my 02 worth

Good luck

Hey Chris,

What is your 60' with the 28s-- do you remember what you were 60'-ing with the 27s?

thanks for the input.

gnsbs,
My 60ft's with the 28's are mid to low 1.5's. The best I could do on the hoosier 27's where mid to low 1.6's

One more shot for comments

Okay folks one more call for comments:

I'm thinking of mounting the 27x10.5 QT pros on 15x8 Weld Draglites with 3.5" backspacing.

Would I be smarter to go with the 28x11.5s given my above goals? Or the 27x11.5s?

Everything I've read suggests that the above backspacing should work fine-- anyone have bad results?

thanks again,
Scott

Back from the dead.

Does everyone use tubes in these tires QTP's that is.

Mine came with a label that said tube type on them.

Were there two types of these tires made? Tubular and non-tubular. :)

Gotta mount them tomorrow and need to see if I need tubes.

Only be used at the track, not driven on the street.

TIA

if you want to maximize your track performance, do not use DOT type tires (QT Pro's, ET Streets)...get real slicks

they are worth from .1-.2 in 60' times on my car over the DOT's ( that's .2-.4 in the 1/4......)

if you are lazy and don't want to change tires (or don't want to spend the $$ for slicks & wheels) the DOT's are ok, but you leave A LOT on the table as far as 1/4 mile performance

...and I don't wanna hear about all the 9 sec DOT tire cars out there...if they put on slicks, they would be 8 sec cars:)

I have some Q/T 27x10.50's on Weld 15x8 also with 3.5" back spacing. I had to trim my fender lips a bit to get them to fit as my GN is lowered quite a bit. I have a Ford 9" rear in my car and not sure if it was made to the exact width of the stock rear, (was in the car when I bought it!). I have tubes in mine and also have the rim screws as well, (mandatory if running tubes). Some guys don't run them but if the manufacturer says to use tubes, I listen. JMO though. One thing to be careful of if running tubes, take out the little inspection tags that you see inside the tire. Believe it or not I had one of those little buggers where a hole in the tube and I got a flat, luckily I was just pulling into my garage when I heard the hissing sound! Still have to break the other tire down to see if there is a tag in that one.

I have driven them quite a bit on the street and really like the way they work. Not for taking exit ramps at 70 mph but if you are careful and keep an eye out on the weather forcast you will be OK.

Here are some pics of them mounted on my GN.http://www.buickgn.com/weldwheelphotos.htm

BTW, in these pics they are mounted on 15x7 wheels, they fit fine like that but had a bit of a bulge. Changed over to the 15x8's, that is when I had clearance problems. For the limited amount of use I should have just left well enough alone!

nah...just do the old Joy soap thing and have a compressor handy:)

I prefer Dawn, good for washing the car too.

Maybe the tube topic needs a Poll. :D

What's that Scott??? Not any faster? So if you ran a 11.00... you wouldn't give the wastegate rod one more twist and make another pass??? ;)

Yeah, sure...

We'll see what happens when we get those new heads on and that TE62 spinning!!

I don't run tubes in my 28/11.50/15 QT PROs. Never had. My 60 foot times are usually in the high 1.5x area. Best to date is a 1.54.

Banning, what wheels were you running on your car, and what backspacing? Any fitment issues with the 28/11.50 tire? I'm thinking about trying out the Hoosiers myself and have been considering the 28/11.50 tire mounted on my 15X8 3.5 backspace Weld Rodlites. Thanks.

Finally a good answer. :)

I'll try sans tubes. Gonna buy a new air tank anyway for racing. ;)

I'll bring the Dawn too.
