Whelp my old man is retiring December 1st after 38 years bei a mechanic for the NJ State Police. I'm looking to get him a gift. I would love to buy him his favorite car when he was a kid which was a 77 TA. But that's just not in the funds right now. Maybe for his 60th birthday. He's an outdoors men, he obviously likes his tools and has a shit ton. Just looking for ideas. One thing he doesn't have is a welder. I was thinking about a nice welder. What you guys think?

Think about the irony of buying a welder (to do work with) for a guy retiring from work. :)

Buy him a small aluminum fishing boat and tell him to go relax.

I get where you are coming from. But he's a do it all type of guy. Just something I feel he could have thst he doesn't and always wanted. Phew has three boats. One 16' Jon boat. A 17' center console and a 21' walk around. Plenty of fishing rods. So got that covered.

Some people like me really don't know how to relax.i need to be doing something .what is he really passionate about .if he had nothing to do where would he go or be doing ? I would want to spend time getting into better shape when i have more time Microsoft has the new fitness band out it does all kinds of stuff for 200.00 bucks just an idea.A welder is cool i never learned how to weld and would love to learn after i retire

Getting him in shape is on the to do list as well. He is a type 2 diabetic. He would either be fishing, hunting or being with his family. He's a good welder, just only has a set up at work. He is my family's and relatives to goto guy so I think it would suite his collection. Hell I'm sure I'll need something welded in the future.

If he really likes more work get him a Buick. :)
haha, like I said He sold his 77 trans am 400 with a 4spd. to buy a truck for the family. I personally think he couldnt afford all the tickets. But we have mine to work on together so that will have to do for right now.

Get him a Hypertherm plasma cutter. They are so fun. It's like a light sabre. Just cutting up steel randomly is awesome. But you need super dry compressed air to use one properly, that's the only drawback.

from your info
1- The car -- even a project car would be good.-- get your siblings to chip in.
2- Tig.
"Workers" type usually start to go crazy and drive everyone around them crazy when they find themselves bored. Getting him that project car will make his transition easier. And save your mom from his boredom and most importantly help keep him out of trouble.

haha, he might cut my buick in half with that thing

Sounds like your gut say's welder so get him a welder.

Depending on what you think he will be tackling with this welder will determine what you get him. 1/10 or 2/20? I have a Lincoln and like it fine, it's a 2/20 and way more than I need for car projects but better to have more than you need than not enough so I would check in to a 2/20. Get him a good welding helmet. That makes all the difference in the world. Good set of welding gloves, spare tips and turn him loose. Sounds like he will love it.

I have a suggestion:

Here is the machine in operation:

I can build it with his favorite car(s) as well.
