Just wondering how you guys are managing with three speeds on the open road with these cars. I have the option to run a T-350 or my 200R4 and i'm just curious if driving to the track 45 minutes away is unreasonable with the 3 speed.

final gear

in the 2004r is 0.67 and 350 is 1.00. Someone correct me if wrong. definately help fuel mileage.

What about a TH400?...I'm contemplating going that route next year, but I have a few concerns and this is one of them...

Claude.

I had a GNs with turbo 400s since 2002. I tried going back to the Overdrive 3 times with local builders that only lasted 2 months at a time in a 12.20 daily driver back in 2001. I had a RMVB with a transbrake. I drove it everywhere up to an hour and a half away. Never failed on me. Now, driving at 3000 rpm and 65mph was not too fun. No highway racing, and no crusing at 75-80 like normal traffic around here. But took a beating all the time without any issues. If I did it again I would do the th-350. I f you plan to travel the highway a lot go OD!

I just went back to the Overdrive this year and am having a good time. Now I have no issues or second thoughts about putting it on the highway. Jimmys Transmission in Mundelion IL did it for me. I have no plans to go back to a three speed anytime soon, but the if and when it will break still haunts me. He stands behind his work and it has been good to me. Plenty of street and track time on it!

Drive your 200R4 in D--not OD--will be the same RPM as a 350 or 400. Then you will know if you are going to like it or not.

What would it matter if it was a 3 speed or a 4 speed that was in 3rd gear. They are both 1:1. Isnt it easy enough to go out with your own car and just throw it in 3rd if its a 4 speed OD? If your worried about fuel mileage sell the car.

Didnt even read yours.

My car is a project thats going together. I have never owned a Turbo regal before. I have a 200R4 and a T-350. The 350 will be built with a brake for the track and 200 will be built for the street. I can and will be using both. I'm just trying to figure out which one I want to put in first and curious if the 350 will be okay to "drive" to the track 45 minutes away. I didnt say I was worried about fuel mileage. Just making sure it won't be tacking through the roof for to long.

Sorry for the confusion :)

you can use any of the various calculators to figure out the rpm with any gear/tire height and slip % to figure out your rpm at different speeds. Or you can figure out the tire revs per mile and do the math that way through the gears back to the engine.

You guys don't seem to understand what he is asking. He wants to know how the temperment of the car will be with a three speed behind the LC2 powerplant vs the overdrive. A person who has never operated a TR at 2600-3000 rpm at around 65mph on a highway ride might hate it. I can tolerate it, but to me it depends on the use of the car. If you plan to drive it to the track a lot and are not shooting for many sub 9 second passes, run the overdrive. 45 minutes in a regular car driving 75 or so is going to take you an hour in a three speed that won't like more than 3000 rpm. Trust me, I drove TRs with 400s for like a decade!

tranny

I have personally done the 200 / 350 swap when I was hit with the high cost of a 200 rebuild 1 time too many. This was like in 2000. I started to get real fast on the swaps and learned a few tricks like the quick release fittings on the trannies and the braided lines to the tranny cooler. Longer dowels on the block and re-routing the firewall wiring harness for easier access to the top tranny bolts. One the questions that wasn't asked, was about your rear end ratio. If you've never owned a TR before chances are you don't know the most common ratios 3.42,3.73, and 3.90( for hard core racers). I had the 3.73 in when I purchased the car and I drove and raced the car for years. I changed to 3.42 and the car liked it better. I liked it better, I haven't put the 200 in the car in over 2 years. I would love to have a 200 built to run every day, hard, but I have to pick my battles with this car. I am happy that I ran it for a year without downtime or breakage.

If he wanted to find out for himself he would just cruise along the highway with his 200 4R in 3rd. What dont we understand?

The car isn't together yet. Post #8. So he is asking should he assemble it with the overdrive or the 350. I would not want to spend the money to build both and one will collect dust.

Some people just post without reading the information provided. I tried to be as clear as possible. Go back and read.

-I am building a Camaro with a LC2 motor.
-The car is currently set up for T-350.
-I have the Trans cross member to convert to 200R4 if I want
-I have both transmissions and havn't built either one yet.
-The T-350 will be real stout with Rev Man V/B and Brake. It will have big 2nd gear sprag probably good to 700Hp.
-The 200R4 is going to be rebuilt with a Sonnax servo and apply plate and few other small tricks.

I plan to have both transmissions built and use both but I can only get one done at first and it's the next thing to be done in my project. The 200R4 will be the Street trans and the T-350 will be thrown in during race months and track outings.

The car is a 3200 Lbs car with full 10 point frame tied cage, Tubular suspension and Ford 9 inch rear with 3.50 gears and 28 inch E.T streets.

The motor is stock longblock, T-netics 66 turbo, 72lbs injectors, mease 65MM plenum and Accufab 65MM T-body, Large Mease 24 row SLIC, Accel Gen 7 DFI and converter will be Trans Specialties 3200 stall 9.5 inch.

Thanks guys for the help and personal experiences. I may build the 200 at first because it's more all purpose. I decided to switch from 383 to LC2 for the quiet exhaust and overdrive so I don't want to stray to far off of that. I can always start on the T-350 after the cars runs/drives

My fault for assuming. The correct answer is to go for a ride in a friends car and see what it tolerable. Taking ones word for it on a forum is a waste since some guys think their race cars are street cars.

Thanks. My brother has a nice GN with a similar setup as mine but has Champion heads, intake and big cam. It's just hard to get that extra time to go driving around and doing this together.

Good point.
I've had a built 400 rev man valve body/brake etc. Loved it, but I sold it when I had the dumb idea of putting the car back to stock. Now I have a built OD. I haven't had the chance to beat on it to much but if it takes a crap I'm going to throw it in the trash and build another 400.

BTW my car is a low mileage weekend cruiser.

So whats your opinion of daily and freeway driving with the 3 speed? How long did you run it for?

I think a daily would be OK if you aren't on the freeway for long periods of time. any decent amount of freeway time and I would pick the OD

I had it in the car for a couple of years but like I said I don't put that many miles on my GN.

for long trips its hard to beat an od and lock-up. 200r-4s are great if you know what you are doing with them. money spent on one will go farther than two,are you trying to convince us or yourself? who wants to do that much work swapping units anyway?
