So I got my car all done. I took it out yesterday on it's maiden voyage. My brother built the trans from scratch. At first everything was working perfect. It went through every gear perfectly and firmly. After a little bit it started getting erratic and than became a problem. It wouldn't shift out of 1st accept for wide open throttle.

Get the car home, pull the pan, find the damn spring.

I have searched all morning for a fix and have only come up with epoxy which I don't see being an answer.

Is there a preferred method of pinning it. Is it as simple as running a screw into it. I'm assuming I need to compensate for the weight added also?

I use a nylon 8-32 screw cut to length. I use loc tite on the threads. The hole in the governor weight is easily tapped without drilling it. These screws are available at home depot in the hardware drawers. If you want to lower the wot shift rpm a couple hundred rpm you can use a steel screw instead of the nylon one. Ive done this over 100 times and never had the spring come out.
 
Ive done epoxy, Nylon screw, as well as super glue with a spray activator. All will work...heavier, like mentioned will lower shifts. Screw is easiest as the chemicals requires rough very clean surfaces to bond to.
 
Very helpful. Thanks everyone. We kind of knew thats what had to be done but just wanted to make sure others were doing it.
 
I use my reloading scale and carefully weight the governor weight before I modify using the procedure noted above. I adjust the weight back to the original weight by drilling a hole in the outside of the weight. I prefer drilling to remove weight because you can easily weld it back up if you remove too much or want to put it back to original.
