I just finished fixing my blown head gaskets. In order to removed oil pan I lifted the engine up (bolted to tranny) about 5 inches, and I didnt remove the linkage from behinf the frirewall. Now that I am pulling the car out of the driveway, it shifted into revers np, then n, then d. but when i try going up from d to n and to p, i have to force the shifter and sounds like a grinding noise. I played around with the adjustment of the rod (FIREWALL) nothing doing. I am wondering if the cable for the shifter may be bad somehow? could i have bent something else? could the actual internals be hurt? could the cable need adjustment? rods maybe bent?

im thinking since it goes down just fine, the rod should be fine. im leaning towards maybe part of the cable broke and it kinks up against the cable tubing only when going up, agains the grain of the cable somehow??

any one got any input? im thinking that i will look for linkage rods inthe junk yard tom. and see what happends??

thanks in advance

Step 1: disconnect linkage bar from trans to firewall, next. adjust shifter cable so that both detents(shifter/trans) match, when adjusted properly and in neutral, you should only be able to select N and OD without pressing thumb button.
Step 2: reconnect linkage bar and loosen 13mm pinch bolt, with shifter in reverse adjust rod to where back-up lights come on, tighten pinch bolt and run shifter back and forth verifing that it will start in neutral and park only.

Kevin.

ps: helps a lot to have someone help with shifter while you are under car.

ok. when linkage is diconnected from the firewall it will only go from n to od. i didnt need to adjust the cable as it was already there. i did however adjust the linkage as the car was not giving me the key. it was locked in the switch. i adjusted it until it finally let it go, als the car will now start. but it still making noise and feels like im forcing something?? what next
