I need to revive this thread as I am in the same situation as 86gnorig, having the exact same broken vss.

86gnorig,

Were you able to find a suitable vss setup for our GNs?

John Spina,

Summit and Auto Meter show the 5291 sender as available. If I can find one, will it work with your converter? Is there a reed switch available that will work in the vss shown in the photo of the AVC setup? That's the one I have.

Will the 60115 work in place of the AVC unit straight up?

I appreciate the help.

Hi, John -

The short answer is no, not yet. Don't know if the Summit/Autometer sensor will work. I'm not an electronics guy, so please excuse any misconceptions here. I think the computer wants two pulses per revolution of the speedo cable (maybe it is just one, no matter) to signal the torque converter lockup and cruise control. and not set the check engine light. The question with the S/A sensor is not the pulses per rev, but whether it produces a "boxcar" signal as a reed switch will do, or if it sends a sine wave signal: on/off vs. rising/falling current. Think the computer wants the boxcar. I haven't found a reed switch on line that looks like it will physically fit the Allen Eng. vss. I have been manually locking the tcc clutch with a console mounted switch as needed, doing without cruise, and ignoring the check engine light.

Well that's definitely the one I need. Anyone else have one laying around?

86gnorig,

Well, I have read through the posts, Summit part description, and AutoMeter web site and the 5291 sender with the Caspers converter should work. I talked to John at Caspers and he said it should work. I ordered the sender from Summit first to make sure they had the part. When the sender came in I ordered the converter from Caspers. I installed everything per the instructions right down to matching the color of the wires. Unfortunately it is not working. I have rechecked everything several times and will go back over it several more times to make sure I didn't miss anything. It could be that the setup just does not work. It could be the sender is bad or the converter is bad. That's the problem with electronics. I have bought several items from Caspers and usually they have been very good but I have had a couple items just flat out did not work. For now I'll assume the parts are good and go back over the install. I wish I had better news but right now it's just not working.

Interested if mine ever goes out. Hope someone figures this out. I will look around to see if I can find anything out as well

I have a similar problem. My torque converter locks up, but only after 10 miles of highway driving. Also my cruise control sometimes quits working. Does this sound like a bad VSS? A third problem I am having is a late 1-2 shift (at 2800 rpm). Line pressure in transmission at idle and in gear is where it should be and my transmission guy is stumped. Thanks.

Since I haven't received a reply from you Buick folks, I contacted the jaguar guy and he assured me his VSS will work on our cars. I went ahead and bought it. Should be here next week. I'm not sure if it will fix my issues but at least I can let you know what I find out. Also, here is his reply to my email: Rick,
I am somewhat familiar with the GNx.
They used a two-pulse magnetic reed-switch vss. We used to sell the same vss, but the wires were thin, and the reed-switch would sometimes come loose because the glue used to secure it, wasn't particularly strong, causing a vss failure.
The vss we now sell has thicker wires, and the reed switch is held in place more securely. We have very few problems with the 2-pulse vss we now sell.
