I guess it is one of life's mysteries lol. I'm helping dyno a guy's GN in a couple weeks. There is a heat gun there (not sure of the real name but you point it and it measures heat). I'm not sure if it has enough range, if it could even accurately measure the temps, or if it would even be a valid test, but I might give it a shot. With my car being a hotair car, the exhaust merges into one and runs about 1.5' before it enters the turbo. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I just talked to the coating shop,, they apply a ceramic coating to he housing. You can do it either 2 diff. ways. Apply the coating to a rough unfinshed houseing for about 60 bucks, or they can prep the housing by grinding and smoothing it out for that show qualitiy look for an extra 25-75 bucks , depending on how much smoothing is needed. they told me they have never had a complaint about flaking or burning off..

I just dropped it off yesterday. He said about 50 bucks for the ceramic coating and 30 bucks for a quick clean up of
the casting marks or 60 for the full smoothing out of the metal. I went with the full smoothing since it liquid ceramic
it does not hide anything. Basically all said and done 90- 110 bucks done late next week. I went with the silver which
is almost chrome. They had some headers on the wall that looked very nice. I pick up a pricing sheet and will bring it
to the march meeting. I cant make it to the feb. meeting.

I have a friend who has the housing on his hotair motor coated in a Jet hot coating, not sure exactly what coating was used. It was done somewhere in Phoenix. He also had the compressor side powdercoated.

check out his pictures at this link.......the exhaust housing is under (my 84 ttype)http://community.webshots.com/user/boost2311

Norbs- motor looks great- i was also wondering where your valve cover breather lines go to- i have a similar arrangement.

They go back into the turbo inlet pipe, i know its not the best, but i have filters in the breathers, from compressed sponge. SOme oils , but very little gets in to the turbo, at 25 psi boost. The idea of clear line is to see if any oil is getting past the filters and into the inlet pipe. They are getting very strict with open breathers up here $400 fines! Thats why i have designed this

HPC Coating

I have a T-76 turbo that was coated last year from airborn coating in Hartford CT. I specified outside of the turbine housing only but they forgot and did the inside also. I removed the turbo and the coating held up well and didn't flake off. It looks very well and no more rust. Also with the coating on the inside, Carbon has a hard time sticking to the smooth surface of the coating. Glad I had it done.

Techline Black Satin

I coated my headers using the Black Satin from Techline about 3 years ago and it didn't hold up very well. After about 2 weeks of street driving the coating had comepletely "burned" off of the primaries. Within a month of application the only place the coating remained was on the flanges. I prepped everything exactly as prescribed by Techline and applied the coatings to their specs as well. Maybe I did something wrong but I don't know what it could be. Just my experience, I'm sure others have had better/worse luck than I.

How did this ever come out? Did you get any pics of the coated housing? Would you recommend this shop? :)

It looks great. I'll shoot you some pics. I would recommend ceramic coating the housing:D

Coatin Parts

If you decide to go this route, remember this is a NASA tested operation.
Coatings and high performance parts have been coming together for many years and the tech involved, includes a most labor intensive prep of the parts being coated. The problems arise when improper shortcuts are intergrated in the processing of parts being coated. Bla, Bla.

Coatings work. Find a pro that has been doing it for a few years. Someone that thinks this can be done at home must have a big specialized setup.
This isn't baking a cake.

Calico, Swain, PolyDyn, Jet Hot have ALL been around for years and have website info. Check them out.

I'm partial to Calico in Denver, NC.

Ref to Turbo: Only Nonmoving parts, inside and out.
IMO, never coat any type of impeller with a teflon product.

If you want to go a step futher, check out www.300Below.com
TURBO MAG had an artical in this months issue about cryogenics, turbochargers in particular, and the 300Below operation is VERY WELL respected in the performance ind. Cryogenic processing is a secret, don't tell.

If you can locate an old CIRCLE TRACK issue (89'), there is a very nice artical about coatings which involved Harold Elliot and Rusty Wallace (Winston Cup Champion that year). After winning the Championship that year HM Elliot opened a coating shop (also in Denver, NC).
