Time to go big

Chuck you always have the most positive posts. Eric's car does have a great clean look to it as well and I'm sure it's never dirty for very long.

My car is definitely a 50 footer for sure LOL. Okay it’s not that bad and it can occasionally win a trophy.

A few of you already know, the “Shock and Awe” factor comes when I open the hood and they see the massive hole that is left when we replace the stock fan and shroud with a electric fan. When I’m parked next to a IC car with the hood up, there’s even more head scratching.

I can relate to this, I love the comparing the most, why did you set the motor so far back and relocate the turbo is always my favorite? Then you hear them say as they are walking away (about the hot air)it probably is a fake GN anyways. Gotta love them experts.

Jamie- I hear the same thing all the time. I also get that the original V8 has been removed. Brad

Have you ever gotten, " why'd you take the big block out?" before. LOL I haven't even gotten my car done and had a few ask that a several times.

I do not thinking Leeo intended to start a REVOLUTION... but it happened:). You and Karl took the torch and ran accross the finish line... (with a 3.8):p:eek::cool:. I am amazed at how the TURBO REVOLUTION has taken over... Looking at GENO's car got me to thinking about HOT AIR cars in the future.... I can see Bowling Green one day with 7-9 SCARY Fast HOT AIRS... Enough for our on class:). If I ever dig out of my hole (nasty separation from Ex.., Economy, student loans, etc), I have a couple ideas on duplication the twin turbo HOT AIR engine....

In conclusion, the HOT AIR group may fight, fuss and disagree on issues... but when the results equal ...SUPER COOL, FAST CARs... we all benefit....:):p. I hope to see all of the HOT AIR group at Bowling Green one year... I really hope to finally me Leeo. He has been thru Birmingham to visit friends. The HOT AIR family is very blessed to have "youngsters" like Leeo and John. Their knowledge is priceless...

I agree with SLOGN, that car is a 10.60 car.... I would consider atleast a 6 pt roll bar. Ms. Jamie's car is a spot perfect example of clean and fast. On the other hand, you do have a sleeper.... I could image the PASSTIME guys all flopping on your car... 12 sec my foot! I could imagine your car as a money maker also... But at some point you would not be able to get race:p...

Well Chuck, that’s my quandary. Where am I going with this car? I’m not going to lie, there is a part of me that wants to push it to see how far I can go. However there’s a much bigger part that enjoys driving it around. My car sees far more of the street than it does of the strip.

My goal with this build was to make a 10 second car and safely run 11’s without worrying about what’s going to break next. I believe that’s exactly where I’m at today.

Racing for money?? No offense, but that’s really not my style.

Eric
My friend, you are where most of us dream to be;) ... For safety reasons, it would be a good ideal to even bolt in a roll bar... I could be removed if necessary. As far as breaking parts, you have the best of everything a HOT AIR could want.... You already know where this car will fit in..mid 10's. Enjoy this car.... Life is to short.... You have work hard to have a car that is RARER now than a GNX... How many HOT AIRS in the 10's. Getting you 60ft down will get you automatically in the 6.90's (high 10's).

As far a racing for money... Grudge Night at the track could be fun... You won't have to bet a dime.... others will:p...

Take a minute, breathe, and enjoy... Now go get some well deserved seat time:D... Live life a 1/4 mile at a time... Smiling and giggling all the way...

Thanks again Chuck, I'll look into the rollbar and appreciate the advice. Once again there's a lot of credit to Richard Clark and Pat Broughton. I've never built a single motor or transmission in my life, however they provided a lot of guidance and gave me help when I needed it. 99% of the money I spent was in acquiring parts for the build. They both can attest to the many, many hours we spent putting this together and making sure it was right. Yes this is all a dream come true! See the fruits of everything I've put into this is an awesome feeling.

Yes my plans are to increase the amount of boost at launch maybe a pound or two and start tweaking timing and fuel in the areas between launch and full boost. This motor doesn't like as much timing and likes 19 degrees at full boost. I started at 20 degrees when I first started tuning it and I have some very scary logs showing mountains of knock along the run. I changed the oil after that and we found no traces of debris in the oil filter, so she's one tough motor for sure.

Here's the good, the bad and the ugly of all my times at the track on the newly built motor

Date 60 foot ET MPH
5/15/11 2.066 8.578 85.46
5/15/11 2.057 8.537 85.66
5/15/11 2.047 8.511 85.97
5/15/11 2.095 8.595 85.69
Pretty disappointed after these passes, but it was only around 12 lbs of boost

I believe this is where I changed from a TA-49 to a TA-63 turbo.
9/30/11 2.178 8.734 85.3
9/30/11 2.161 8.664 85.40
Needless to say I was really upset at this point and just wanted to drive the car off a cliff

Re-stalled converter, TR-6 ignition, alky, Pat ported the intake and more boost
8/23/12 1.764 7.726 82.18
8/23/12 1.750 7.520 93.38
8/30/12 1.906 7.786 92.91
8/30/12 2.068 7.882 93.09
8/30/12 1.860 7.721 83.17
8/30/12 1.899 7.762 84.76
8/30/12 1.953 7.869 93.57
8/30/12 1.921 7.712 94.61

More tuning and playing with the alky
9/13/12 1.820 7.562 95.44
9/13/12 1.891 7.664 95.55
9/13/12 1.756 7.434 96.28
9/13/12 1.797 7.428 96.33
9/13/12 1.956 7.714 95.38

More fine tuning and first transbrake launches
10/28/12 1.696 7.297 96.90
10/28/12 1.716 7.357 96.52
10/28/12 1.584 7.120 97.23
10/28/12 1.637 7.207 96.85
10/28/12 1.769 7.455 96.40

I think the issue with not being able to run higher timing is with the plugs, I had Autolite 3924 plugs in the car and yesterday I replaced them with Autolite Racing 3933 plugs. I'll see if that helps some, however it'll be 2 more weeks until another Test n Tune comes up.

Have you ever gotten, " why'd you take the big block out?" before. LOL I haven't even gotten my car done and had a few ask that a several times.
Nope can't say I have. Instead I did actually take out a hot air that converted to a small block chevy was running a second and half faster in the quarter then he could. The fuel guy asked him why he removed the hot air motor and replaced it?

Eric it would be so cool if you got that timeslip yet this year.

I just check the track schedule and they have 3 more Test n Tunes before they close the track down, so shouldn't be a problem at all. I also have one card that I haven't played yet. I'm still using the knob style boost controller on the car. After this next TnT session is over, I'm going to switch to the ISAC for boost control. Should be able to spool up faster with it.

Next year I'm going to ditch these 5 year old M/Ts and get some new rubber. Planning on competing in the turbobuick.com nationals next year and hopefully it'll be interesting.

New personal best, but not what I was hoping for.

60' ET MPH
2.335 9.248 93.62 Spun pretty bad off the line, too much boost
1.594 7.094 98.94 New personal Best.
1.603 7.104 98.80 Playing with timing, boost and fuel
1.654 7.197 98.36 More playing with fuel (Leaned it out a tad, not the right direction)
1.844 7.559 97.03 Tried to launch harder, but ended up going the opposite way.

There's a passenger side header leak that was getting worse each pass.

Isn't it just one thing after another

Eric you are almost there... Your personal best converts close to 11.09@121.00. My friend that is SMOKING!!! Keeping you 60' in the 1.5 range will get you in the 10 sec Hot Air club... :p . Keep up the GOOD work and get more seat time;)

Thanks Chuck. I have a few odds and ends to sort out before the next trip to the track. First is the exhaust leak, second is my powermaster is on the way out (Accumulator bowl is nearly gone), my shift points are too low, so going to see about raising them 200 RPM and it's getting a new beefed up drive shaft.

Things don't come that easy, but they do happen with time.

We had a pretty good GN turnout at the track this time out. There were 4 of us there. Pat Broughton ran the best of us all with a 6.6 second pass. Then Jim Anson ran a 6.8 second pass, John Goury ran a 7.05 and I ran my 7.09
