One of my friends is having a problem and here is what he posted on another board So I was wondering what you guys thought of it and if you could id the convertor and also tell him what stall and brand of tcc to get.

Have been discussing a boost control problem with quite a few people. I have come to the conclusion that it is converter related,...
Bob slusser told me that I should check my stall,....well......
I tried power braking it and it start spinning tires with NO BOOST,...and about 1300 RPM???
There for I pulled the sheild off of my 1 year old transmission (aamco) and the converter looked brand new but said only 20G on it????
Anyone have a clue as to why a proffesional transmission company would put this "no stalling" hunk of crap in a 87 grand national??????
Please keep in mind my first gear sucks bad,....15 psi...slow spool up
but 2nd....and 3rd....is better than great!
also,..
What stall should I get and shouldnt they put it in...since it is not the right one?

Unfortunately, using a generic converter seems to be fairly routine with repair chains such as that. If the converter has the correct splines & physical dimensions, slap it in.

The vast majority of their customers will never know that they received an improper stall speed converter or even a mis-calibrated, replacement transmission. 1300 rpm at zero boost is for the birds for sure.

I would take it back there and demand installation of the proper converter or bring in a converter of your choice from a reputable vendor and have them install it. Bad thing about bringing in a converter is that they will, no doubt, balk at honoring the transmission warranty.

AAMCO told me they do not even check end play and just reuse the selective washers!!! For the $$$ they charge and they admit they do not take the time to build them right.

Kinda shows that just because you can put it together doesn't mean it's done right. One: most people still have no idea what stall speed even means to a car, let alone to a boosted car like the GN's. Second: some don't care to make it RIGHT even though they are getting all the bucks to do the job. If you want, have him visit our web site, fill out a spec sheet, and I will get Bruce's feedback and tell him what he is looking at as far as stall speed. If they won't make it right, he will be looking at a new converter to put the smile back on his face. I assume he is running a GN? Factory stall on the stock D-5 is around 2400rpm so at 1,300, he has to be hating life right now. Let us know. We will be more than happy to answer any of his questions, either here or just call.,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks, Mark :D

Yea he is kinda hating it.Trying to tune his car for all this time and woundering why the boost dosen't act right in first gear.He has a slightly bigger then stock turbo and was trying to get the boost right in first gear only to find out it wouldn't adjust correctly then in the other gears it was boosting too much.

So the guy is chaseing the problem burning out o2 sensors because the car is detonating in the top gears thinking it is electrical or a chip problem. And the whole time it's the convertor.

Shoot me an e-mail telling me prices on a 2400, 2800,or 3000 rpm convertor would cost I think he's on a budget.I'll try to get his specs and send them if that is the way he ends up going

Hey Mark, are you ready for this?

"Yes we sell those [high stall] torque converters, but I don't recomend them because you have to set the idle so high."

LMAO - Can't believe this cat is "recomending" parts for anybody. I should have asked him what the "P" on my gear selector lever was for - maybe my "P"assing gear :smack
